Jeanne wants to go home. A new hope by Kiradawea

Merit for March 2010

"Ohoi there Kira!" Jeanne yells as she enters the quiet halls of the Hallifaxian
library. Her long, white tail sways happily behind her and bungles into several
bookcases, almost knocking out a few books in her eagerness.

"Shh. Calm down little girl." Jeanne looks up from the book she's writing and
turns towards her young friend. She barely has time to brace herself before the
white bundle of energy jumps up and crashes onto her.

"Kira. Weren't we gonna go on an adventure today?" Jeanne looks up at Kiradawea,
her eyes sparkling with the excitement and joy that only a young child can
muster.

"We were my dear, we were, but I'm so very, very close to a breakthrough right
now. I need to finish this first."

"What are you doing?" Jeanne peers over Kira's shoulder to look at the papers
before her, noticing various formulas spread around, along with a drawing of a
peculiar spire of sorts, with several pointers and notes written to it.

"Do you recall back when the two of us worked on empowering the main generators
of Hallifax? Remember the visions you got each time we finished a set of six
mandalas?"

"Oh yeah. That was hard work. I got dizzy from all the climbing up and down we
did. But the visions were cool."

"Yeah. Cool, and... educational. See this tower?"

"Yes. It seems oddly familiar somehow. But at the same time it seems very crude
and blocky, with all these things sticking out everywhere and stuffs. It seems
difficult to build too. Like it can be knocked over easily."

Kira sighs as her furred paw slightly thickens parts of the base upon the tower.
"Yeah. That's one of the problems I've faced..."

"Why don't you tell me about it? Maybe I can help?" Jeanne jumps onto the table
and walks over the various papers, scanning them with her curious eyes.
"Although... I don't know very much of what's written here. But maybe I will if
you tell me!"

Kiradawea smiles and strokes Jeanne's cheek tenderly. "Perhaps..." She yawns and
stretches herself. "It's been exhausting to work on this for so long, I could
use a break."

"Hang on then!" Jeanne yells as she jumps of the table and runs of, only to
return shortly after with two golden cups and a vial crafted from black opals.
She places one cup before Kiradawea, and another cup before herself on the
table, before she carefully pours a sparkling, slightly purplish liquid into the
cups.

Kiradawea carefully lifts her cup towards her snout and inhales, causing the
fizzy contents to sting her nose slightly. "Sparkleberry wine? Aren't you a bit
young for this Jeanne?"

"Oh puh-lease... please? There was no more fruit juice left, and I don't like
tea. Can't I get to taste this today please? You keep saying that it tastes so
good!"

"Okay, okay." Kiradawea ruffles a paw over Jeanne's head. "You know I can't
argue with you when you get an idea in your head."

"Yay, thanks." Jeanne bounces up and down in delight, before she glomps
Kiradawea to hug her, knocking her over her chair and spilling Sparkleberry wine
over both of them.

"Jeanne!" The young air-elemental stands up, her white fur almost taking up a
pink hue as she blushes furiously. "Sorry..."

---

After cleaning up the mess, Jeanne curls up on her chair besides Kiradawea and
tilts her ears towards her warden. "So... uhm... sorry. Can you still tell me
what you're making? Can you? Can you?"

"You are unbelieveable..." Kira grins playfully. "Unbelieveably adorable too
though. I can't stay mad at you." She pulls out the paper depicting the drawer
of the spire again. "I'm not surprised if you find it familiar. Do you remember
some time ago, when Zenos tried to destroy the basin?"

"Zenos... that blob of acid rain and wind that stung painfully and that we had a
very hard time to defeat? Yeah I remember that. It was back when we were still
living in Celest..."

"Yes. Do you recall that, in order to seal him back we had to do multiple
things."

"Yeah. Help the nice bug lady get rid of those icky beasts, and then we had to
help that water lady... what's her name. And... oh."

"You got it huh?" Kiradawea gives a wry smile as she takes a sip of her wine.
"Yeah. The design is similar to that of the spire we found upon Mount Dio."

"That place was freezing cold! And the monsters there were so scary. But we did
it. And then the whole world got bathed in those nice healing energies. But what
has healing got to do with this breakthrough of yours? I didn't think healing
was your primary area of interest."

"I've dabbled in it before. I only focused my studies upon Astrology as my old
guild lacked anyone to provide Astrological aid. However, it is not because of
the healing energies that I've paid an interest in Mount Dio."

"Then why?" Jeanne licks the rim of her cup, then takes a quick drink from it.

"Because the energies it send out discriminate." Kiradawea takes a sip from her
cup, as she watches Jeanne's expression change into one of even more confusion.
"The spire can discern if someone carries a lichseed within them, or if they are
bound to dark spirits. It is attuned to discover sources of taint energy and
weaken them. If I can use the basic idea behind this construction, I think I can
create smaller beacons that can be used for a type of echolocation."

"Echolocation?" Jeanne closes her eyes, her tail swishes back and forth slowly.
Finally she blurts out. "Wait! That's locating things through sound isn't it?"

"Correct. Now if I can create it to rebound when it encounters a specific kind
of energy..." Kiradawea trails off, her voice urging Jeanne on to draw her own
conclusion.

"Oh. I see it. You can use it to find specific objects from far away."

"Yeah. Of course, there are multiple issues that I am trying to work out. First
of all, I need to design it so it is actually buildable. No use creating
something that'll fall over on a stiff breeze. I also need to figure out how to
create waves that only return when they hit a very special frequency.
Considering that I'm trying to find something that is partways physical and
partways elemental, that is going to be a toughie. And then I need to figure out
how to recreate certain waves... there's a lot of work involved."

"I'm sure you can do it." Jeanne says, her eyes looking down upon the small
puddle of wine left in her cup. She downs the rest with a quick gulp. "But this
is all way too complicated for me. I don't think I can help much."

"That's fine. I'll figure something... out..." Kiradawea throws an eye on her
papers and quickly jots something down. "There we go... that might work."

"What might?" Jeanne's ears perk up as she looks over the notes Kiradawea just
scribbled.

"Heh. Something." Kiradawea smirks and gives Jeanne a peck as she quickly
gathers up her notes. "Go find a scarf or something. We're going to have an
adventure upon Mount Dio today."

"Yay!!" Jeanne bounces happily, before she leans in to return a peck. "Thanks
Kira. I'll be ready in a minute."

"Take your time. I need to clean up... here." Kiradawea looks at the white ball
of energy rush through the hallways, bumbling into bookcases and knocking over
tables. "That girl... heh. Well then. I'll continue this later, when we return
from the mountain." She takes her pen to scribble some final notes, before she
tidies up her papers and the mess left by Jeanne, before she calmly walks out of
the library.
