Soaring by Sylandra
Runner Up for June 2010
Little trill dreams of big blue sky.
Isune’s calling, and she doesn’t know why
You’re sleeping, when sun’s about to rise!
Take your paintbrush. Color those skies.
(Oh, child of wind, descendant of air
Can you think of any life more fair?)
Wings beat fast, like a lovesick heart.
Gravity’s lost you and you notice with a start
You’re looking below you, trying to see
The instant that your soul broke free.
(Oh, child of wind, rider of the breeze
Can there be any days brighter than these?)
Any child of earth can wear down soil.
All children of this world are meant to toil
Yet you, my daughter, to you Clothos gave wing
To dance upon clouds â€" to let your soul sing.
(Oh, child of wind, through the skies we’ll soar
And what more, my darling, could you ever ask for?)
--
Lucidian boy thinks of fantastic thoughts.
A little trill spies, and secretly plots
To see them, the ideas spinning in his mindâ€"
Surely they, like his crystalline body, do shine.
(Oh, child of crystal, hewed of stone
What thoughts do you think, when you’re alone?)
But she stumbles, this girl, and yes he knew
She’d been spying, but simply did not care to
Shoo away this silly trill, for his thoughts were clear
Despite having some curious girl draw near.
(Oh, child of crystal, boy who shines
Would you like to know some ideas of mine?)
“Yes? What do you want?†He looks back at his books,
And despite his dull tone, she asks, “Can I look?â€
He pauses, turns a shade of pink in denialâ€"
His emotions can’t hide, and it makes her smile.
(Oh, child of crystal, Trillillial spoke true
When she said we trills can’t get enough of you.)
--
Sun passes by each rising dawnâ€"
Trill looks to lucidian, no longer young,
The world now traveled, those books now read
They snuggle close, lips quiet, instead.
(Oh, children of earth, how long are the years
We spend here, wasted, on grounded fears.)
“Darling, speak your mind,†his lover asks
But he has no new thoughts, nothing but glass
Reflecting a silence the two both feel
One with a frown, the other shimmering steel.
(Oh, children of earth, why wandering lost?
Is your heart now frigid? Can you thaw the frost?)
Perhaps he had nothing, but he’d kept her there
Locked by love’s chains in a world without air.
Her wings flap and he blinks as she soars:
“I can’t be left on the ground anymore.â€
(Oh, children of the earth, time spins fast
Didn’t we ever tell you promises don’t last?)
