Fireflies of the Night by Solanis

Merit for July 2010

Little Seeker,
In the cold darkness of the night,
blinking lights are a welcome sight,
Flitting merrily, to and fro,
they raise one's spirits when they are low.

But beware of their bewitching dance,
that seeks to mesmerise and entrance,
For innocent creatures they are not,
In their embrace, you will decay and rot.

For how else can dark Spirit Night,
draw in followers to bolster Her might?
It is what they call beauty and charm;
For surely beauty can do no harm?

No, their 'beauty' is naught but vanity,
that lacks inner peace and serenity.
Ensnared by her sticky web of silk,
Her victims become the next of her ilk.

Little Seeker,
You must understand what 'beauty' has wrought,
All the needless battles that we have fought,
You know little of what does lie ahead,
Past years of betrayal and bloodshed.

Believe not in the shallow beauty of Night,
the transient allure of fireflies in flight.
Instead, take faith from the moonlight nigh,
The milky orb that hangs in velvet sky.
