The Saviour of Solstice by Ridley
Runner Up for December 2010
There once was an epic Gnafian plot
To subvert the Seals and spread stony rot
The heart of Solstice, fetters of ice!
Simple vengeance would not suffice!
And so did the Basin descend
Aetherships rounding dimensional bends
Glomdoring, Hallifax, even Gaudiguch too!
Ye'd think this a stage for a fragging snafu!
But no, dear reader, this was not the case:
To the bubble of Frosticia lead our race
Snowmen, icemen, iceladies too,
Icebourne fae of glittering blue.
Yet beauty, as we know, is only skin deep:
'twas beneath their skin that a hate did creep.
But, alas, 'tis a tale for another time;
A story of Traitors and terrible crimes!
And so we begin our tale anew,
Following a group of Hallifaxians true.
'twas at their fore we find an unusual trill
A man of science, trudging uphill.
Amongst the Snoefaasia he walked,
And among them, still, he talked:
At one turn, a child's dreams were crushed:
And to another did he gift alcoholic slush!
And so, through mockery, he learned their ways:
Snowfamilies, snowchildren and their snowtypical play.
Indeed, he mused, what an interesting sight!
Snowtypical snowgender roles cast them in a conservative light.
Through antagonism was progress made,
A frigid amulet of curious Delportian shade.
From peasantry tears did magic accrue
An ickle snowbaby that came from the blue.
Our hero, a father, would double his deed
Crushing dreams? A Hallifaxian creed!
Influence would birth the baby's twin,
A cold icebaby to his snowbaby kin.
With great haste were they delivered to the Hyborean Crystal
An artifact with logic to make scientists bristle!
Indeed, 'twas a machine that worked on baby fuel
The humour was not lost on our hero as he approached the jewel.
"Hurry, dear hero!" pleaded Frostono as he came into sight.
"Indeed", said Coldmore, "We must begin the sacred rite."
"Shamanism? Me? What a surprise!"
Our hero would mock, amusement in his eyes.
What happened next is anyone's guess;
I was half asleep, I must confess!
The babies had fused into a fractal key;
A curious snowflake to set Jolly free.
In a burst of light it melted his cage,
But the gleeful little gnome held no rage.
"Ho ho ho!" he boomed, rosy cheeks flushed
He gave us his thanks and his departure was rushed.
And all through the night, rifts tore through the sky;
The little red gnomes had returned with a cry.
Solstice had come - this much was clear!
And with it came heartwarming Solstice cheer!
Tiny merian children frolicked without care;
Burly tae'dae cubs carried presents to share.
Rashaala and Tosha had settled their feud,
Peace and goodwill had been renewed.
And so was Ileein a figure of historic fame:
Do not forget, Eileen is not his name!
The Saviour of Solstice had made his debut.
And it is to his credit this tale is true!
Now, dear reader, I bid you adieu.
It is time this reader withdrew,
Gnomes fall from the heavens, drifting from sight,
Singing "Merry Solstice to all, and to all a good night!"
