The Rampage of the Strange Shifting Serpents of Sand by Raeri

Merit for May 2011

Some have asked me what I like
to do in my spare time -
Besides dreaming at the Moonhart Mother Tree,
or trying to make 'mammoth' rhyme.
I tell them about the the reason why (in the Tidal Flats)
I seldom strayed away from my comfy spot -
From digging up clams or wearing silly hats,
or mugging a mongrel or three!

Cutting through the splashing waves
to my ears, they did a-perk -
For they heard a scuttling and I - mouth agape -
watched as the sands opened from 'side the turf.
A legion of crabs marched forth in time
while the seagulls all took flight,
The dunes underfoot all rising -
believe me - 'twas quite a sight!

We stomped them down, ground into dust (or sand!)
yet from their remains a new wave arose,
Lobsters with giant unyielding claws,
yet still being of sand, through them we dozed.
When we then saw it coalesce into the form
of a fortress-like turtle of likes we'd never seen -
A crab? A turtle? It mattered not - (yes, I know we should have stopped)
for the cycle seemed to be without end.

We eventually tracked them to a glassy sea of sand
in the depths of the aetherways,
And there we saw a mighty serpent of sand
crowned king of that strange waterless land!
We chopped at its tail to try to make it repent,
and it seemed 'most like it would fall -
'till the mighty aeoning serpent prevailed...
turned around, and then promptly ate us all!
