Melodies of Assimilation - Grand Hallifaxian Collectivist Ball Opening Performance by Morshoth

Merit for February 2012

Deep black curtains part, revealing a large orchestra, instruments ranging from string and brass to percussion. A small aisle runs down the middle of the orchestra, which is lined with a deep amethyst rug, trimmed with diamonds and gold.

A figure begins to walk down the aisle, revealing the Sublime Opus of the Symphonium, Morshoth Skyplume. He walks forward, clad in a solid black suit, and takes a bow. As he rises, he turns around, faces the orchestra, and raises his hands in the air, a single diamond baton grasped within his left. The entire area falls silent.

As the Opus lowers his left hand, a simple plucking of violin strings begins, single droplets of sound filling the air, resembling a light rainfall on a spring day. Springing forth from the baton is a light mist, which begins to fog the area, leaving only the Opus visible.

Morshoth's right hand shoots out towards the right, which cues a deep melody into performance, the sounds of violas, cellos and basses causing the mist to slowly vibrate along to the sound, which then changes to a soft lavender colour.

As the pluckin and the melody continue, the mist begins to recede, revealing the first row of performers, a single brass line, who then raise their instruments to their mouths

Morshoth raises his left hand back towards the sky, then drops both hands out repeatedly. As he does so, the brass instruments join in with the melody, adding a steady rhythm to the sound, the tempo of the entire orchestra speeding up.

As the Opus continues to move his hands, conducting the orchestra, the mist continues to change colours, changing from the lavender, to a soft blue, and once around the colour spectrum in soft pastels.

Morshoth begins to slow his hand movement, lowering them as he does so, while still continuing to move them. The music begins to hush, the mist begins to settle, and all the performers are revealed.

The Opus taps his baton through the air, hands still at his waistline, which the violins match with their plucking. All other instruments begin to fade out, leaving just the plucking travelling through the air.

Suddenly, the diamond baton shoots into the air, and with it, a bright light fills the stage. Suddenly, the plucking turns into a frantic melody, each group of violins on opposite sides of the stage playing a different, chaotic tune. The tunes clash with one another, a battle of notes, neither side winning.

Morshoth spreads his arms in the air, each hand making a small circular motion. Stepping forth from the light is a lone harpist, who walks down the aisle, and then sits atop a stool in front of the Opus. She raises her hands to the harp, and begins a harmonious tune.

As the harpist plays, the chaotic tunes of the violins begin to meld into this tune, joining her in a perfect harmony. The harpist spreads her wings, which blocks the bright light, once more revealing the performers of the front row. A single trumpet, to stage right, begins a harsh song, attacking the melody floating through the air.

As this inharmonious brass attacks the unity of the song, the remaining brass begin to join in the attack. The harpist begins to slow her tune, all others behind continuing their pace. Her wings are lowered, and from behind her marches a line of soldiers, each one with a flute to their lips. These soldiers all line up to face the brass line, a hauntingly hypnotizing tone being played towards them.

The harpist fades into the background, as the soldiers continue to face the brass. From right to left, the brass begin to mesh with the tune of the violins. The single trumpet who began the tune is the last to join, putting up a fight to the end. As the soldiers begin to gather around him, his tune fades. The soldiers march off of the stage, leaving behind only an empty chair. The last soldier turns around, while marching off of the stage, then runs to the chair and takes a seat.

The Opus brings his hands in, then begins to alternate lifting each hand into the air. The flutist begins to play a strong, powerful tune. As he does so, he stands in the air, then begins to hover above the ground, held aloft by the flapping of his wings. He continues to play, and the entire orchestra begins to join in the tune.

As the flutist begins to gather this power, the Opus faces him, tapping the baton in his direction. As he does so, the flutist begins to float downwards, heavy chains rising from the chair to wrap around his ankles. The orchestra fades back to their original tune as the flutist is dragged back down to his chair. As the final chains wrap around him, the flutist joins in with the tune of the orchestra.

The Opus lowers his baton, which brings the orchestra to a sudden stop. The lights fade, and the baton begins to glow from within. As the glow gets brighter, a single spot of light hits a lone performer, off to stage left. A soft melody begins to escape this light, and suddenly, a stern lucidian appears, with a simple mallet in her hand, tapping out the notes on an instrument of hanging crystals.

Morshoth raises his right hand and the lone flutist in the front, who is now unchained, joins along with the melody of the lucidian, a light dance between the two. As the Opus raises his baton, the rest of the orchestra joins in with the two, a soft melody supporting the two.

The Opus waves his hands through the air, violins playing a slow melody to the beat, with the deeper notes of the other strings acting as a simple bass line behind the notes. The brass play an elongated melody, which is heard just slightly over the strings. Heard over the entire orchestra is the joyful melody of the flute, which is playing opposite the crystal instrument to the side.

Morshoth slowly lowers his hands, and the orchestra softens their tune. The two remaining instruments slowly begin to line up their melodies, and the flutist stands to join the lucidian. As their melodies finally mesh, the trill flutist reaches the lucidian, and wraps his wings around her. Their melody quickens, as the two disappear behind a wall of feathers.

The Opus makes a quick movement of his hands, which silences the room, all attention on the couple surrounded by feathers. Suddenly, Morshoth points the baton at the two, and the wings begin to recoil. The crystal instrument is revealed, now fused together into a much larger instrument, a small replica of the city of Hallifax. The lucidian and trill take a mallet in each hand, holding one another with the other, and begin a powerful, deep tune on the crystal city.

Morshoth raises his hands, waving them outwards and inwards, and the entire orchestra begins once more. The melodies all come together, into a very powerful tune, echoing throughout the area.

This melody continues, the Opus' hands moving more and more frantically. The crystal instrument moves towards the center of the stage, as the two performers continue to play. The instrument reaches the point just in front of the Opus as the melody reaches its quickest point.

The Opus quickens his pace, the melody continuing to quicken. Suddenly, he strikes his baton on the crystal instrument. A deep ringing fills the area, the orchestra suddenly silences, and the curtains fall.

As the ringing dies, the crystal instrument glows, and the Opus disappears below the stage. A simple tone of brass bells fills the air, ending the performance with a deep ringing throughout the city.

The curtains rise, the Opus standing front and center, with the entire orchestra standing behind him. The group takes a bow, in unity. The Opus, along with the more prominent performers, all step forward, and take a bow, as the orchestra behind them applauds. The curtains fall once more, leaving the Opus solely in the front, who takes one final bow, then lifts his baton towards the sky, and falls beneath the stage.
