Graduation by Synbios
Merit for September 2012
The walls of the laboratory hummed ominously as the elderly trill Researcher descended down the stairs, his protege in tow. After months of study, the lucidian youth had impressed the Matrix Institute with a well-written paper on the relationship of excoroperditio energies with Astral entities. It was perhaps only fitting that the graduation be held in the Laboratory of Void Studies. Researcher Ismbard followed suit, on the Amanuensis's instructions. The ceremony is a delicate event, and more hands were needed to ensure that no untoward incidents happen.
The protege gazed curiously at the void orb suspended in the middle of the laboratory, its atreous surface occasionally being examined by instruments that barely skimmed its surface. Sometimes, a beep would be heard from a nearby data-crystal as readings were being tallied. He tilted his head curiously at his mentor, who merely motioned for him to follow.
Pressing a hand against a section of the wall, the mentor took out a set of blueprints and passed them to his protege, motioning for him to read the schematics and instructions within. The surface of the lucidian's body flashed a few shades of excited yellow as he began to pore over the documents. The next few hours passed by rather quickly, the ominous silence of the laboratory being broken by the protege asking a few questions once in a while towards his mentor and Ismbard.
Finally done, the protege took hold of the blueprint and attached it to a floating crystal slate, which began to follow him as he approached the centre of the laboratory. Opening a small pocket in the rift, he summoned several glowing amethysts, each one pulsing with the power of the Continuum. Concentrating and re-reading the blueprints, he began to mould the amethysts together, the gems fluidly changing shape into various circuits, components, extrusions and shapes. Deftly manipulating their shape, the mass of liquid crystal began spinning, allowing the protege to make more minute adjustments.
Several minutes later, the mass of crystal began to take on a lengthy shape, with a large, hollow chamber that terminated into three prongs. Ismbard, on seeing this, then pushed several buttons in succession, as the laboratory sirens blared. The protege nodded as the security protocols were momentarily lifted, and several floating instruments, at the mentor's guidance, began to funnel the energies of the Void orb into the hollowed-out crystal chamber. Timing the procedure promptly, the youth immediately moulded the last glowing crystal into a protective sheath, sealing the void energies inside the device.
Re-enacting the security protocols again with a satisfied smile, Ismbard then followed the mentor as they observed the floating device, performing extensive checks to verify if the circuitry was stable enough to contain the device's deadly contents. Apparently satisfied, they nodded at the lucidian, who approached with a tense expression. He reached out gingerly and, eventually mustering enough courage to grasp the handle of the device, which began to flicker into action. A shade of relieved blue flickered across the surface of his body.
His mentor finally spoke, "Congratulations. Your first void blaster creation has been a success. With this, your research can now begin."
