Beggarly Minstrel by Themius

Merit for June 2013

In this life you've got to eat, got to do what's best,
And here I am, and at my best, it's more like a fest!
Minstrel days are long,
Minstrel days are strong,
Full of whiskey, parties many, and lots of jaunty jest!

Fun's my name with silver tongue and scandalous fame,
I never starve when I can beg a pretty, rich dame!
Influencing is my call,
I truly give it my all,
No one can blame the pretty dame, I am rather hard to tame.

Though, I could spread rumours, distrust and more,
But intimidators are such a bore,
Paranoia's not fun,
But sometimes must be done.
Then I'm back to the preferred, begging folks door to door.

Sometimes I do empower the brave, who guard our city gates,
In fact I've spent time so much, we're really good mates,
It must be something grand,
Just to watch and stand,
While people come to praise you so, admiring your traits.

No, begging really is more work, than rumours and praise,
Not just in the words you use, or carefully laid phrase,
But what you wear,
Or going bare,
Sandalwood too helps your case, so it all truly pays!

But what to do with greedy folk, immune to my wiles?
I cannot conquer with just my wit or flashy, winsome smiles...
So talk them down,
Mocked through town,
Not a pleasant sport, but I've walked it several miles.

Supplicating, a lively time, but seducing's even better,
Whisper, flirt, so intimate, release their inner fetter...
Charming like a devil,
I draw them to my revel,
But beguiling with flattery makes me a starving debtor!

Ever the wheedling I will go, my Minstrel heart at home,
With whiskey in, no clothes without, and requiring a comb,
Swag'ring 'round the world,
Lips impishly curled,
To beg and charm until I'm blue, getting richer as I roam!
