Voyage Through Time Controversy by Anael
Runner Up for February 2015
Time travel is a theory filled with all sorts of controversies. From the religious cults to the rational researchers, people view it as an unattainable technology and others will fear that taboo. If an individual is able to go back and forth into the Time-Stream, the scientific society could make tremendous advances within a wide range of topics. Answering the questions only the dead dared to answer, several years of progress in only a few months could grant us technologies that could outmatch the Soulless Gods. Of course, if it ever be released through the media, weak minded masses would quickly spoil it, ruining our present world with their futile, witless desires. A well-guarded secret is often the most precious thing when it comes to unsafe but crucial studies.
Many factors may oppose the very idea of changing our fates:
-The fact that the Basin might change drastically in result of careless or unscrupulous travellers discourages most people of even thinking about temporal manipulation. As an example, the religious groups are strongly opposed to any kind of modification of their present stream. In their minds, that kind of science is considered heresy. Protestations might distract the scientists from their research so it is important to be discreet. People fear the unknown.
-The Time-Stream is much too complex for hazardous speculations, experimentation is required if we want to actually progress in that field. If it was a continuous straight-line, nothing could logically be modified because it would automatically result in paradox. Most simple example is killing an extended family member, which would be impossible since killing your grand-father will result in you never existing, but then your future self wouldn't be able to go back in time himself. Thus a paradox is created, but the Continuum possesses some kind of backup system rendering it immune against paradoxes. This was the Singularity and now there is Multiplicity, another theory. Instead of a single stream, with no possibilities of changing anything related to the past, you got a number of separate branches, a network of rivers, each containing their own universe. If this was the actual form of the Continuum time space, then temporal travel would be more than possible, as multiple routes are available. Single stream or Multiversed embranchments, whichever it is, experimentation is required to be able to understand the whole process, thus the risk level is high. A good way to find out what the Temporal Stream may look like is to design intricate schematics of each and every logical possibility. If the Continuum is indeed about Order and Logic, and if our scientists' work is impeccable we should be able to prepare ourselves with actual security measures based on said calculations, adequate equipment, sophisticated instruments, safety nets... whatever might come to use during the experiments. Teams of researchers should be developed adequately: two sentinels accompanying three members of the Institutional Society for protection in case of any dangers on the other side. An aeromancer is an asset not to overlook, even though they lack the training of Aeonics. Preparation is the key to a successful study.
- Suppose a team has successfully travelled back or forward in time, what guarantee them of ever coming back to report what they have accomplished? How can anyone presume the other side isn't a dangerous world reeking with hostile creatures and devoid of all civilization? This would be a potential disaster, imagine the News: "Scientists conducting dangerous experiments disappears without a trace." It doesn't sound good, because without workforce this study will end within a single month. Every precaution must be taken, every single scenario must be considered before actually trying anything. That would be foolish otherwise.
Even with all those risks, incertitude and controversial protestations there will be people researching, experimenting and actually finding a way to achieve it and they will keep the secret for themselves. As the beacon of Science, Order and Harmony, it is the duty of the Collective to discover this technology first. That way it will prevent unsafe usage, aren't the Sentinels supposed to watch out for anomalies? Does not the Institute study and protect their Cosmic plane? Indeed they are safe keepers of the Continuum and the Time-Stream. Time travel is an important step forward for the Collective and its guilds, as well as for the greater good of the Basin.
I hope this scroll helped you determine either or not travelling through time should be acceptable. All points should be considered extremism leads to misjudgement and clouds the mind of the weak. This invisible wall will fail to withhold the blows of the mighty Collective.
