A viscanti archaeologist named Tyria stepped onto the streets of
Magnagora seeking help with a project she had recently undertaken with a
crew of like-minded people. Frustrated by the lack of people paying
attention to her pleas, she began yelling throughout the city until
people finally awoke from their daydreams to speak with her.
Harsh in tone, she described how her job had bought her and her team to
the Blasted Lands, seeking any remnants of a long-lost civilisation, the
Gylleulox Empire. Present during the time of the Vernal Wars, this
Empire was led by a man known only as the Great Tyrant, she informed the
assembled group. However while he was known to be a charismatic man; it
wasn't this ability which bought him power and enabled him to create an
Empire and quickly expand it. It was a mysterious prism he wielded which
inflicted his foes with the most terrible blight, unable to defend
themselves against this sort of power his enemies were quickly destroyed
or assimilated into his ever-growing army.
Intrigued to learn more, the group of assembled Magnagorans, including
Revan n'Kylbar, Sahmiam m'Viraz and Tedd Cassius amongst others made
their way to the Blasted Lands to seek Tyria's camp. Upon discovering it
they found a bustling archaeological site, with viscanti workers
delicately working the earth in hopes of discovering more about this
mysterious Empire and its leader.
Tyria sought bones from the Blasted Lands which are believed to be of
those from the Empire who retreated to that area after the Soulless
decimated the majority of the army, believing it would break a ward
which was blocking entrance further into the cavern. The group quickly
scattered into the tainted wastelands in search of what Tyria needed,
although not fast enough for her as she kept yelling at them to move
faster, they were on the verge of an important discovery!
The group eventually acquired the required items, and followed Tyria's
other instructions, noting that she had a particular hatred for the
assembled illithoid due to their nature as shards of a Soulless, who had
destroyed this Empire all that time ago.
Upon retrieving the vast amounts of dark essence she required, a knowing
smirk took over Tyria's features as she called back her viscanti
workers. With an insane laugh she commanded them to perform a ritual
which reduced her subordinates to little more than animated skeletons.
Dark essence swirled around her form, empowering it... a realisation
quickly overcame the Magnagorans, they had been tricked! Tyria's true
form was revealed to be the Great Tyrant.
With a satisfied nod, she declared that she no longer had any use for
the Magnagorans and swiftly commanded her undead minions to kill them
all. The skeletons were quickly dispatched and in frustration the Great
Tyrant ripped away the ward and levitated into the previously blocked
portion of the cavern, while the Magnagorans following her within.
Inside they discovered an amphitheatre with a prism floating at its
centre. Tyria quickly began to attack the prism but was easily repelled
as the figure within the prism which let out a booming laugh and began
to speak. Identifying itself as the Voice of Jagrerox, speaking from the
Cacophony Tower within Magnagora, he quickly demonstrated his power,
paralysing the Tyrant and forcing her to remain as his thrall in the
amphitheatre. He then performed a song for his loving audience which
empowered their body and spirit before fading away once more.
As the history of the Voice of Jagrerox unfolded, it became known that
this Voice was extremely extroverted and not shy about manifesting
before mortals during the time of the Vernal Wars. Unfortunately, this
led to the Voice being captured in a prism by some unscrupulous mortals.
While the Voice didn't seem to particularly care that it was encased in
a prism, mortals soon found a way to harness the song of the Voice to
use as a weapon. Reports of the prism would occasionally be recorded
throughout history, usually in the hands of tyrants. Rumours circulated
that the prism itself put others in thrall of its loud raucous music and
controlled them for its own ends.
The Great Tyrant founded the Empire of the Gylleulox using the power of
the prism. Enemies of the Great Tyrant found themselves hearing a
cacophonous tune before being stricken by some terrible illness. Just
before the Gylleulox Empire was consumed by the Soulless, the Voice of
Jagrerox escaped the prism (thus, throwing into dispute whether it was
really ever "imprisoned"). The Voice of Jagrerox then disappeared from
the annals of history--that is, until it manifested in Magnagora.
Now, the resurrected Great Tyrant is trapped and fixed to her spot in
the cavern, raging against Jagrerox, and declaring that one day the
Gylleulox Empire will return and her former glory be restored. Will she
ever be able to break free of Jagrerox's spell? Will more be learnt
about the ever-enigmatic Gylleulox Empire? Is this the end of the story
of Jagrerox and the Tyrant who believed she controlled him? Or are more
chapters to this story yet to be written by the Fates? And, finally,
how will the discovery of the history of the Voice of Jagrerox impact
the Cacophony Guild and their teachings?
