The Shadowdancer Leiliadhe was hunting Kephera deep in the tunnels of
the Undervault when she first heard the voice, a hissing malevolent
whisper which taught her a riddling phrase that she should repeat to the
'Priests of the Ouroboros'. Later, other illithoids heard it, first
within the Undervault and later upon the sunlit surface of the Basin.
Lord Morgfyre's priests brought the message to their Master, who ordered
His minions to go to the Undervault and determine its source. A month
passed, and the brief, infrequent whispers had grown more vehement and
furious. Recalling the original purpose of the Great Illithoid Prison,
Lord Morgfyre directed His Order to set about killing the kephera to
weaken their psychic webs, and a small party led by Revan n'Kylbar and
Veonira d'Murani craftily poisoned several Kepheran food caravans,
wiping out whole hives at a stroke. When enough of the Hive Queens had
been slain, Lord Morgfyre appeared before the Great Seal of Keph and
ruptured it, freeing the crimson figure of His ally and one time mentor.
Trapped by accident within the ancient bonds by which the Goddess Keph
imprisoned Soulless Illith in eons past, Lord Fain writhed impotently
for a decade, waiting impatiently for a mortal to slay the Hive Queens
and break their iron grasp upon the trap. Eventually, tendrils of His
thought wriggled free of the psychic constraints, attuned to the shards
of the prisons last resident, and He might finally call for aid. Now
Fain has returned to the Basin of Life, bearing a new found enmity for
the shards of Keph.
