Early in Vestian in the year 214, a quarrel loudly echoed throughout
Faethorn as Butter Sweetpease demanded that her husband Perriwinkle
remove himself from her sight. Beside himself with worry, Perriwinkle
enlisted the help of Azman Elderbranch and Talan in securing a plethora
of ingredients to tempt the cook in Butter to forgive his transgression
- though he would not admit to what wrong he had done to his wife.
For her part, Butter was also greatly upset by quarrelling with her
husband. Laysus L'Eternae and Sarrasri Talnara helped her piece together
the ingredients to make a special cake in apology as they waited for
Perriwinkle's return. Just when poor Butter began to wonder if she would
have to send a search party for her husband, he returned, the gifts were
exchanged, and the couple made peace. It was Laysus who guessed the
source of their quarrel: Butter Sweetpease wished to have a baby!
The next month, weeping was again heard in Faethorn as Butter mourned
that she and her husband had been unable to have their baby. Ryleth
Ysav'rai attempted to advise them, but it quickly became clear that the
Sweetpease family needed something other than the usual flowers and
romantic wooings. Butter needed a seed to plant! Many people from both
communes gathered to help as she baked an elaborate cake for Queen Maeve
in the hope that she might lend her aide, and the ploy was successful.
Maeve provided onlookers with a puzzle box, claiming that the seed was
inside, and soon the forest folk were answering riddles in an attempt to
pry the box open. Only once did the combined wit of the communes fail,
but Maeve only smiled and demand more cake.
When finally the seed was brought to Butter, she planted it near at hand
and asked the gathered members of Serenwilde and Glomdoring to help her
tend to her sprout. Water, she explained, would influence the plant to
grow into a girl, while earth would become a boy. For the next several
months, the communes brought such earth and water as they wished, hoping
to not only influence the sprout to become the gender of their choosing,
but to also perhaps lay a mark upon the child, to tilt its alignment
towards Glomdoring or the Serenwilde.
Finally, the tiny sprout began to blossom, and Butter and Perriwinkle
were overjoyed. With great pride, Butter entreated the Moondancers and
Shadowdancers to help ensure the blessings of Moon and Night upon her
baby. Each guild produced a charm, a moonlit charm blessed by Selene and
a blood-soaked charm blessed by Lhiannan, that Butter used to imbue the
growing sprout with shadow and moonlight. Thus touched, the plant
blossomed into a perfect fae child, a bouncing boy named Dandelion
Sweetpease! Though certainly influenced by both the purity of the
Serenwilde and the Wyrd, his eyes were a pure green colour, proving that
the northern forest had outdone the other in helping the growing sprout.
As the gathered people of both forests looked upon this miracle, the
white-haired child suddenly became very quiet, concentrating on
something only he could see. Abruptly, amid the surprised gasps of his
parents, he split into thirteen dandelion puffs that spread out through
Faethorn! Only by helping Butter bake more honeycakes and giving them to
the errant puffs did the commune members manage to gather all the parts
of Dandelion together again, and as Quatte led the last puff back to
Butter, she coaxed the child to reform into a bouncing baby boy again.
Despite his odd habits, Dandelion Sweetpease is already the pride and
joy of his parents, though what the future might bring to the strange,
powerful fae, none can foresee.
