We all know that Faeling is the only sensible choice to make , but I'd like to see what you all think of a bit of an improvement. (And hopefully this doesn't already exist!)
It seems to me rather peculiar that although we are winged creatures at least half the size of a dwarf, we either walk everywhere on foot or fly too far above everyone else to be seen or heard. In ground battle particularly, I find it strange that we can apparently swing to hit an Igasho's head when we probably can only just reach up to their knees. Not to mention falling down holes...
I generally think (and judging by the descriptions I read so do others) that surely a faeling generally hovers just above the ground. Its my understanding that the levels of stance in Lusternia run through prone -> standing -> flying, but why not add another level in there between standing and flying: hovering. I recall levitation from some of the other IRE games, though thats not exactly what I think would work. Rather than a defence, make it a level of stance you can take.
Example:
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p ex- HOVER
With a quick flutter of your wings you rise and begin hovering above the ground.
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p eh-
You have recovered balance on all limbs.
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p exh- LAND
You gracefully descend to the ground.
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p ex-
An enchantment could probably do the same thing for those without wings or class flying ability, and a heaviness affliction could drop someone to the ground until cured. But at least it means we might actually use our wings for practical purposes, rather than just soaring to the clouds.
What do you think?

I made a similiar suggestion in closed beta... I got booed and told to learn to roleplay... go figure

That's a very nice idea and actually that is how I always imagined faelings, like pixies.
But seriously, that would be nice if that could be implemented. It might not be easy though as I think adding another stance level would need a lot of coding, I might be of course mistaken. But at least faelings would stop falling into pits then.

Elryn is here, hovering above the ground.
If you want to reach up to places faelings usually wouldn't be able to while walking, (say, swinging for a non-faeling's head), you should need to hover.
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p ex- target head
You will now target the head of your opponents.
50h, 50m, 50e, 10p eh- jab Cronus
You need to hover before you can reach that high!

Aren't Faelings supposed to always be flying anyway?
How tall are they? If they are as small as "normal" Fae, then it would look silly if they traveled by walking.
I think I have seen some Faeling characters where it says in their description 'as tall as a short Elfen' which seems very, very wrong to me.
I can't imagine any Fae creature as being that tall... I HATE it when people have Faeling that big.

Well, if faeling are always hovering, wouldnt it make sense that they couldnt have their legs swept from under them or be knocked off balance in a similar way? I'm saying, sure, go with that idea that they can't be, but if their always hovering, then being webbed or the like would put them automatically in a prone restriction. A nice little balance in my opinion. after all, you cant get your legs taken out form under you, eh? well, i'll web you to take you out of the air and to keep you still. works theoeritcally. or however it's spelled.
Unknown2004-11-09 16:54:16
2.75 Faelings make one Elfen.
Unknown2004-11-09 17:05:03
Or 4 in my case.
Unknown2004-11-09 22:36:18
I actually had this idea, but have been to bleh to post it. I don't see faelings flying so high you can't see them. I see them hovering in the same room people on the ground are in. Also, the FLY message for faelings is the same as everyone elses and doesn't fit. I'm sorry, but faelings don't flap their wings powerfully.
And no, faeling are not fae, they are fae and elfen, meaning they'd be bigger than fae. I used Rumal's (Imperian char) method of figuring out how the size that affects your char's height. Basically, for every stat point, there's 6 inches. Faeling is size 4, so they'll be about 2 feet tall, give or take a little.

Glad to hear that it sounds like a few others have also had the same idea. I like both Iggy's and Donnar's suggestions too, if there's advantages to be had there should be corresponding disadvantages. Maybe some of the anchoring abilities that prevent summons wouldn't work either if you were hovering. Hard for me to root to the ground when I'm not touching it.
The reason I don't think it would work well as a defence is because there are a few defence-stripping abilities, and I'm not sure you can cast a spell to make my wings disappear, without serious cost. Yes, coding would probably be difficult, but not prohibitive - and besides... the admin we've got are doing great so far!
As for RP'ing it... sure, that goes a little way. Not sure if I'm going to waste balance to an emote each time I want to hit someone's head though. And when you fall down holes and break your legs? Er.. I forgot to beat my wings for a moment there?

I really think it is a good idea, but I don't think we should lose the flight ability to. I mean I have seen butterflies mocking me from high places where I couldn't reach.
Damn butterflies.
Damn butterflies.
Elryn2004-11-10 00:50:59
Yeah, I don't mean replace flying, just add something beneath it.
Unknown2004-11-10 01:03:43
Faelings are the love children of Fae and Elfen, much like Clay Aiken being the love child of K. D. Lang and Howdy Doody.
I'm sorry, I had to say that.

my method for finding out how big something is is take the size stat and divide it in half. most humans are 6 feet tall in our world, elves, who are slightly shorty, would be about 5' 6" or about 5'8". Igasho would be around 8 feet tall (their sasquatches, afterall) and faeling would be about 2 feet, with furrikin about 3. See how it works?

You don't need to. I think faelings are supposed to be almost constantly hovering anyway.
Unknown2004-11-10 17:54:32
A racial ability that duplicates the Levitation spell in Elementalism oughtta do it.
Typhus2004-11-10 19:31:29
Heh.. Poor Faelings. Hmm, interesting roleplay to have a faeling to fly up and whisper in your ear.

Aye, thats what I would have thought as well, but then how come we can be tripped, fall down holes and so on? If we are hovering, then we should be affected as such.
Unknown2004-11-11 16:54:23
Yep, I agree. I was a faeling for a good couple of months and my description read that I was hovering before you, glittery wings flittering or whatever. Sure it worked for roleplay but in game mechanics I was still screwed. Certainly don't think getting a leg broken should of effected me. Oh well, not a faeling anymore so who cares, hehe.

You get the same exact results if you use either of our methods.
Faeling: 4*6 inches= 2 feet
4/2= 2 feet
Human: 12*6 inches= 6 feet
12/2= 2 feet
