Probably if you're 16 they can risk your parents sueing IRE for making you work. There're a lot of suitmad americans :-P
I am almost 24, and I would apply if it wasn't I have too much fun with playing to forget about my characters and spend a lot of time building and building and doing customer support.

Well im 24 and I dont tire of role playing games. After playing them since I was 10 I always considered rping as the mature adult version for gaming....................... I could be wrong yo!

You don't sign any NDA or anything unless you are actually viewing code or working during a beta period. They just don't hire people under 18 because they're unreliable. This isn't to say that everyone under 18 is unreliable...they aren't. But it's usually a higher ratio, and so it just isn't worth the risk.
Note that this was the policy based on the last time I actually queried someone about it. So maybe they developed a stronger legal basis for it in the past year or so.
Oh, and anyways. They aren't technically hiring you to do anything. You're volunteering. They make this quite clear in the process. It's no different than just playing their game...only you're contributing in a different way than you would as a character. This changes a little bit if you're a coder, but then that's why you've got to sign an NDA before that happens.

Actually, now I've read the announce post, it's kind of upsetting that I don't even have the option to become an Ephermal. Meh. Makes you think your influence or enjoyment of the realm can't possible be as important as that of someone four years older. Why don't we just line all the young ones up against a wall and shoot 'em?
I think I'll go drink some sugar to cheer myself up.

I believe it was Richter who said on the old boards that two of the best and most mature RPer's he had met were 13.
As frustrating as it is for the more mature younger ones, well, you must simply sit and wait for your day to come. As we all wait, so do you.
P.S. I'm thirteen, and I'm more mature then a decent amount of the adults I know.

I don't think people are questioning the maturity of specific individuals. It's a broad, inclusive generalization, made simply because they don't want (or need) to waste their time. Odds are they'll get a far larger group of prospective individuals if they took people under 18 also, but the vast majority of them would be a waste. If they start at over 18, they can pretty much be assured of a much higher percentage of eligible candidates.
That and I'm sure there's OOC conversation up amongst the Divine that isn't good for young, virgin ears.

We signed no NDA for closed beta
Rhysus2004-11-30 13:04:03
It's not always necessary to sign an NDA for a beta period on something. If they were concerned about us releasing information to a press source or something, they'd have made us sign an NDA for closed beta. As it was, I don't think Estarra really counted on everyone staying entirely hush to all of their buddies that didn't get in anyways, so why bother making everyone go through the process of signing an NDA?
Iridiel2004-11-30 15:01:45
I think there wasn't any over 18 years old requirement on closed beta either.
Atmos2004-11-30 15:15:59
I'm 19, but like so many others, I'm having too much fun playing the game. Perhaps some day, but it's unlikely.
Edit- Hmph. I had forgotten that there was another page to the thread. It would appear that my memory is going in my old age...

I'm not really whining...I know it's just one of those things.
I would really appreciate a Divine explanation, though.

NDA's are given out whenever IRE feels the need to protect information. I've signed one on more than one occasion.
Frankly, I would be far too scared to abuse Estarra's trust anyway. She looks nice and funny, but it's all an act! *looks around nervously*

Estarra will KEEL you! Yep, that's right.
Dritex2004-12-01 03:11:16
The only requirement to get into beta was Estarra, and whoever else may have been choosing people, to pick you for it. Was, I believ, was heavier based on times we coudl be on, and how much we would try to regularly be on.
Unknown2004-12-01 20:44:48
I would give up playing in a second to build, unfortunately, I don't have the 200 hours in-game qualifaction.. which is even MORE annoying >.<
Unknown2004-12-04 14:03:33
I'm 22, I have plenty of time, I've been coding and playing muds for ages and I actually enjoy coding even more than mudding but ummmm I've never had any leadership position in IRE muds yet... Dang. No application for me.
Ha, I actually just passed the 200 hours mark too. go me.

Well Im finally 18 but I chose not to apply. It was a pretty hard decision since Ive applied every other time in a few other games but I suppose theres just too much potential for future fun in the game right now. Guess Ill just have to wait till Im bored. Besides, too busy working for two other games heh.

Oh yea you can. Now, go back to being silent, withdrawn, and, let us not forget, that quiet, medatitive type, you know, the loner, with the long flowing dark hair and beautiful features that draws women like flies. So. Yea. Shh, let Etanru think it's the Apocolypse.
