I think its actually by guard type, since I know that not all the commune guards are of type brave (I was bored and started analyzing everything under the sun one day). Also, I think the Celest Kusalas (monk guards) are brave, though I'm not sure.
I know that not all the commune guards are brave though.

They can even be offered, and will reset to you. Artifact runed weapons are auto-no-decay-no-reset. Ditto with jewelry that has the Great Rune of Enchantment (or any artifact rune on anything, for that matter, meaning this includes staves, symbols, etc.).

Is there a list somewhere of which inherent abilities which beasts have? If not, which ones do you know?

Mt. Zoaka wyverns have Riding, Flying
Estelbar ponies have Influence Begging

He's right, they just seem to wear off without an actual timer from my experience. May have something to do with how long the weapon remains being used with the oil on.

I've noticed that sharpness tends to wear off right before midnight every time, so I think it lasts a day or so,

I've coated with sharpness only to have it wear off moments later (right before midnight)
