well, it's not a bug, timewarp is an auric affliction, but envoy would likely be the thing to do

Like so many others (apparently), I noticed that the functionality of the Privacy Gem on the artifact listing isn't described in any meaningful way.
I've already done a forum topic search, and I found five or six relevant threads, all filled with a colorful array of guesswork and assumptions. Despite being a chaotic mess, these essentially boil down the to item being 99% useless, and also possibly regarded by the Divine as a beacon for potentially hilarious mudsex voyeurism.
Two questions:
Has this changed at all in the last two years (since the last thread about it was made)?
If not, is there some reason why it doesn't grant complete and total privacy? It's not like people can't use chat programs for sensitive private discussions (or digital uniting of unmentionables), even staying in character if they wish, so I don't see the harm.

If the privacy gem is the same as it is in other IRE games (and I see no reason why it wouldn't be), it prevents eavesdropping on tells by anyone, even gods, but excluding the super-gods like Estarra and Roark, because they're just amazing that way. It may also prevent regular Gods from seeing what you type, which they can normally do.

Gods can't see what you type. They can see what you do, but untill you hit that enter button, your command is purely client-side.

That's what I meant. >.<
Aerotan2010-04-17 15:40:47
Of course, that still doesn't prevent them from simply being in the room, supershrouded
Ileein2010-04-17 15:59:41
True. So says are still not -absolutely- safe, though unless you've got a god who is really out to get you, you'll probably be fine. Tells will be safe.

Tells are probably the least safe, since they can be intercepted on either end using basic legacy code.

I can't just see what you type, but I know what you are thinking. I know what you ate for breakfast and I know what you are considering having for lunch. I also know what you do at night, after you close those curtains...

Even with a privacy gem, assuming both people are in a room with one?

Jokes on you, I don't close my curtains.

Okay, Divine excluded, what mortal spying and/or eavesdropping abilities can be used to surveil actions and/or communication in a non-private aethermanse room? Which of these are then prevented by the Privacy Gem? Excluding methods that can be prevented without a Privacy Gem, such as (according to the old threads) paintings and certain pets.
Personally, I'm not too concerned about what the Divine can and cannot see.
Edit: By "non-private aethermanse room," I don't mean it's open for any character to enter. I mean it's free of the effects of a Privacy Gem. I'm also assuming that strict permissions are set on entry as appropriate, etc.

Well, some people get a kick out of being watched, or so I've been told.
Besides, I suspect that Hallifaxians alone provide more than enough material to keep Elostian busy nearly 24/7 with such a hobby....

Does this mean Serenwilde has finally been replaced?

My theory is that if I'm doing something I wouldn't want a divine to see, I shouldn't be doing it.

I was hoping it'd be more interesting or involved than that. But still, good point.

Come on, that's like bringing Microsoft into the equation when discussing software developers. It's hardly fair. (I love you guys! )
But seriously, does anyone know the practical effects of the Privacy Gem on mortals? I really want to know (I just want to know the practical use of the Gem, or lack thereof).

Stealth users can't eavesdrop on your aethers. It's basically a useless item.
