That has never been proven

Wrong.
"But to their sorrow, they learned the Son of Yudhe was destroyed in this alternate reality. But they discerned that his essence remained, scattered through a race calling themselves humans. And so Magnora and Dynara schemed and plotted to enter this alternate reality and unite it with Yudhe, thus bringing progenitor and son back together."

Big to Kiradawea, and a little one for Lehki and Lendren and everyone else who helped! Thanks.

And we also don't know if changelings are shards of someone. (Even the idea that they're a race is disputed, though largely only because of people who have RP separation problems.)

More that it's purposely kept vague so people can just view it as an artifact.
Which I am very thankful for.

Could easily be argued both ways.
1) Getting the artifact reveals that you're "really a changeling," so it is a race. Once you have purchased it you can change race almost at will.
2) It's really the artifact that's doing it and not actually a race thing. It just makes you look like a "changeling" when you wear it (so, again, it's the artifact doing it).
Since artifacts are IC and you can trade it in (and no longer be able to change your race at all, nor even look like a changeling), I would dispute the assertion that people who disagree with you have "RP separation problems". Though I probably would go with your belief that it is actually a race on an OOC level, the main reason I have for that is the fact that HONOURS *PERSON* can show "changeling" in the race. Which would, itself, be an OOC point. Hasn't come up IC for me so I haven't really put any thought into that end of things.
I suppose where I am going is, "Don't just instantly dismiss people who disagree with you as having RP issues," because they do have a valid point. Just like you do.

That isn't the RP separation issue at all. There's no problem whatsoever with Alice deciding that her cameo gives her the ability, and Beth deciding she's a changeling by virtue of birth. No more so than there is with trills being upset that someone else can buy wings that let them fly.
The RP separation issue comes about when Carol tries to decide for Beth that Beth really can change only because of the cameo, for no better reason than that Carol knows OOC that you have to buy the artifact with credits. (I don't think I've ever heard of a situation in which some Diane tried to decide for Alice that her decision about why she can change is wrong, but if anyone did, that would also be an RP separation issue, and wrong, in precisely the same way.)
As long as the game background allows for the possibility of being a changeling by birth (which it does via this quote: "Cameo of the Changeling: 1000 credits - Marks you as being of the changeling race.") then every changeling has the right to decide for themselves if that's what they are. The only RP separation issue is the people who willfully ignore that in favor of "well, you bought that with credits" as the only pertinent point.

Nope. It's not the artifact doing it. Mechanically, yes, you need the artifact to changeling, but it's a race. "You reach out and embrace your hidden heritage of a changeling, and slowly transform into a RACE."
Furien2010-02-11 23:35:08
Nejii being a Changeling is pretty much the justification for the racial haphazardness of the entire Talnara line.

You are also falling into the same trap. It can be argued both ways, so trying to state that your way is the only one is, well... faulty.

OOC Divine, or IC Divine? Since IC Divine also disagree on such things (and they'll tell you that they "don't know everything"). See: The nature of Illithoid.
Also, Viravain says that Faelings have no shard.
