I can only really speak for DC, but there are tons of museums in DC. It's almost obligatory that you visit a museum in the National Mall while you're here. You also can't beat the price -- free.

Chicago's nice for a vist, which is all I've ever done there. And sadly I havn't been anywhere else worth mentioning in a long time so.. *shrug*

D.C. and New York. All sorts of touristy things to do there. You'll want to stay as far from the west coast as you possibly can.

New York, NY and Miami, FL? That's a lot of space in between... with plenty to do! Washington, DC is always a hit, but make sure you stay with tour routes. Just like any large American city, it can get really scary really fast if you make a wrong turn somewhere. I've never been to NY, but you'll not want for things to do there. Chicago, IL is great too (my hometown), especially now that we're for the first time ever pissed off enough to impeach our state governor (douche bag) . In between all those you'll find plenty of places to visit-- Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach, Gettysburg PA, Disneyland (or world, don't remember which), the Appalachian mountains, etc etc. Once you cross over the Mississippi River, you'll have to travel much farther to reach tourist destinations until you reach the West Coast. I don't know how long you'll be here or how much money you'll have, but that will probably dictate where you go and how long you stay there.
And though I live in Columbus OH, there's like... nothing exciting here. Or in all of Ohio. Unless you are an Ohio State University football fan, in which case you'll fit right in with all of the other wackos.

Stay away from Kansas. :/

To reiterate what Everiine said: Stick to metro routes when possible in the city. It makes your life simple.
If you've got money to splurge, spend your day in Georgetown...where all the rich people live. *envy*

Avoid Georgia. Nothing interesting here unless you went to Atlanta or Savannah.

But, and I'm speaking from experience, Atlanta and Savannah are both fairly awesome. Especially Atlanta.
