Guard influencing is fine. It's not like anybody is shooting to Demi because of the easy XP from influencing guards. The only levels where it is really good is like, 55-70, after that, it's sub-par to bashing. If you don't like nexus spam, don't sit at the nexus.
I actually encourage guard influencing because it's annoying enough to keep annoying people from afking at the nexus!

Wait, how can they be annoyed if they're AFK?
Unknown2009-01-16 18:51:17
Well, if I'm going to AFK I want it to be somewhere quiet so I don't miss out on any event/clan chatter.

But if you can see the chatter, how are you AFK?
I think we must be using different definitions of AFK... to me, it's when you get up and leave your computer to do something else. Cook food, wash dishes, use the bathroom, take a shower, answer the door, walk the dog, etc.

Actually this statement is false.
Refer to Jozan or Veyrzhul
Mostly Jozan.
Celest don't deny the truth in this matter, influencing is so OP.

Yeah, but I eventually come back, and I won't want random stuff to have flooded my screen while I was gone, or pushed important things out of the buffer.
Jozan got Titan by influencing 18 hours a day for who knows how long. It's not like something you can do for 30 minutes every now and then and get demigod. I've been influencing guards as a level 50-something faeling bard on an alt. The xp is not that great, I'm just too squishy to bash things that would be worth the same.
EDIT: And to extrapolate beyond that even further: mid level bashing sucks, so until more areas get added for that level range, the guards should stay.

The thing I like about influencing is that you don't have to worry about having small amount of health, so for faelings like my character, I actually have a viable way to gain experience without losing it because I wandered into a room with two aggro mobs instead of one. The best part? You can't influence in groups, so you can't get a bunch of people up in levels super fast. Influencing takes longer than bashing, and to be any good at it, you have to transcend the skill. How is that OP?

At the risk of destroying my credibility by exposing a motivation... I agree.
As a perpetrator, I have to also agree. I wish we could find a way to make it so influencing could be done silently. There's no other good solution I can see: we can't not keep guards at places people hang out (that's why there's guards there), and we can't not hang out at those places, and we can't expect no one to take advantage of this influencing possibility -- even if a few people decide not to do it, someone else certainly will, and probably someone who'll take twice as long to do it, too.
Wish I could think of a good solution. The best idea I have is this: CONFIG SEEINFLUENCE ON/OFF. When it's off, you don't see other people influencing around you, though you do see your own. Turn it off most of the time, back on when you're influencing or in contested villages. I bet that would be ugly to code, though.

I think that if there is a problem with people influencing, putting up defenses and ratting at the Nexus, there should be a city/commune rule made about it. These can't be rules that no one imposes either. The only time I would say that it's okay to influence at a Nexus is when no one else is around. I do like the idea of an on off switch for influencing. Maybe we could also have one to ignore the power that gets put into the Nexus as well?
Kelysa2009-01-16 21:10:27
I'd be happy if nexus guards were just perma empowered and all the others were still doable.

That's so easy to gag with almost any client though, it hardly seems worth making it server-side. Influencing is a lot harder to gag reliably and it has a lot more effect on a lot more people including the younger ones who can't handle gagging things yet, so there it seems worth it, maybe.
Gregori2009-01-16 21:32:17
I would be happy if they would just make guards at the nexus not influenceable. God damn that is spammage in an already spammy as hell place. How about we move all the guards 1 north of the nexus and leave 1 at the nexus to just use as call for help?
Unknown2009-01-16 22:03:59
That's up to your commune I guess. Personally, spam at the Nexus doesn't bother me. If you wanted peace and quiet, you wouldn't stand on Broadway in Times Square in New York City, would you?
Unknown2009-01-16 22:35:46
I find it incredibly rude to do (and I influence guards!), and make a point both of not influencing guards at the nexus, except when nobody is there, as well as to give the person doing it a lot of snide emotes and comments. Granted, they are, 90% of the time, afk anyways...
Times Square may be a busy place, but the "The End is Near!!!11!!" dude still gets shooed off by the time he's on the third repeat of his litany. And he's WAY more interesting than guard spam.

Did I hear my name? On Caerulo's last influencing idea thread, I already mentioned that influencing guards was way too easy and that I was going to hit demigod in 3 and a half months (and the first couple of weeks I didn't know what I was doing since I'm not an alt). It certainly could use a re-examination of risk vs. reward.
This isn't a Celest issue, since every organization is doing it though. I just happen to be the most prominent example of its potential success.

3.5 months to go from titan to demi?
or 3.5 months to go from 1 - demi?
If the former, that's slow.
if the latter, that's about right if you are doing 18 hour days.
Unknown2009-01-16 23:30:55
It's the latter. If that's the norm, then I don't see what the complaint is. Unless it's just envy.
Edit: I was referring to the complaint on how good influencing guards are...not the Nexus spam.
