Doesn't Achaea have a city-newspaper option? I know -some- mud does, and it's somewhat like a small town paper, complete with gossip, jokes, short report, etc. Would be a fun option.
Ooh! I didn't know they did that! That would be a fun option. Of course, it's actually completely doable now. There is a newsletter pattern. All an org would need is someone to gather up news posts, maybe edit them to fit the format, gather up jokes, editorials and whatnot, put it in the newsletter, make copies and sell them. The author would be the org, and each time the original was updated, the copies would all get the latest edition. The only thing with that is that older editions would be copied over... But, another org book, one of the 'useless' big ones, could be used as a 'Periodicals' section of the Library and each week or whenever new editions of the news letter come out, the old edition could be copied onto a page of the Periodicals book. If the Periodicals book is just archived and not published, it wouldn't go out to the other libraries and could be edited constantly cause there would be no year long publication lock.

Nothing stopping us from doing it here either, someone just needs to organize it. The mechanics are there that it could be done if players do it.
Just for the record, I would totally subscribe to such a newspaper. The time it would take (to assemble each issue) would be so high though.
Unknown2009-01-20 19:13:40
Well the idea in Achaea is that a city-mob yells about/sells it, which also covers the circulation/advertisement.
Edit: Also, time to assemble wouldn't be insanely hard. CL write state-of-the org posts every 5-10 IG years already (I assume? I certainly do in other games), so that's a freebie. Plenty of people like doing -fun- contributions (gossip section, check), and orgs already have library contests (hello there, excerpt from winning entry(-ies)). Use mudbot's editer to paste it all neatly, and you're good to go.

Now I totally want to do it...

I would love something that I could copy popular patterns into, so I can show customers what is available. Having to tell several item's worth of examined descriptions is rather annoying. Perhaps a patternbook? Or just a book with more than 20 pages. I like to keep track of my designs.

There are books already with more than 20 pages. Books come in 2, 20, 50, 75 and 100 page lengths.

plenty of people take it because they like to write in game and it's convenient, or because they enjoy submitting bookish designs. Consequently, I don't see any particular necessity for a redesign.
Doesn't that feel a bit like punishing people who want the convenience of making their books? I mean, I like the convenience of making my own jewelry and I'm sure tailors like being able to repair their own clothes, but they also have profitability and some of them have better end-skills.
The tradeskills don't need to all be balanced on all counts, but what if someone went through and rated all of the tradeskills on all of your criterion, and bookbinding ended up with a total rating of 20 points and all of the others were 30+? Would changes be more likely then?
I've only ever been a jeweler and a bookbinder and I'm not a fighter, but what if someone more knowledgeable than I did that?
Rika2009-01-20 20:09:42
In terms of profitability, I'd say... alchemy > herbs > enchantment > > poisons > jewelry > tailoring > cooking > artisan > > forging > > bookbinding

What about combat viability / utility? I know jewelry has the scrying thing and that bookbinding's magictome was pretty cool...
Noola2009-01-20 20:15:19
Alchemy above herbs? I'd have thought it was the other way... cause of how with alchemy there are supplies you need (kegs, vials, herbs) which might cut into profits while herbs are all free and sprouting out of the ground and all.
Rika2009-01-20 20:17:14
Well, all the transcendant skills are pretty useful to have, to some degree. The only ones which don't seem to be as good as the others would probably be artisan prized and possibly cooking herofetes. I say this because prized is fairly weak compared to what everyone else has and you can always just find another cook for herofetes. I believe herbs is the only only trade with another bonus, which is that you can hold 20 puffs per pipe.
Vionne2009-01-20 20:18:11
Maybe someone should write an IG book about comparing tradeskills.

Well, it really depends on how much you want to charge and how much you want to provide. That applies for most trades.
Edit: Oh yeah, something I should have added with the utility thing is that everyone has different needs. For example, I don't have a natural scrying ability, so tierstone is great for me. Warriors and monks can never use a magictome in any useful situation (poor Nejii).

So not to clutter up this thread, I posted my suggestions in this one:

Ask Rika about making gold as a cook. I don't want to type it all out again.
