I am looking for a good, preferably free online game to play. Something fun and interesting but not overly addictive or tedious. The kind of game where you can level at a reasonable place and get around to player killing in large groups. But not Lusternia. Graphics, please.

free
not tedious
level at a reasonable pace
Also doesn't exist.
But from your description, Warhammer or Guild Wars seem like the best games for you.
Warhammer has a monthly fee of $15, and guild wars doesn't, but guild wars also doesn't have a true persistent world - areas are generated for groups of people. Main focus is PvP, though, and you can roll a PvP only character that starts at the level cap. Guild Wars also releases a lot of expansion packs for new content, each at $50, so in the end the lack of a monthly fee doesn't come off much cheaper.
Levelling in warhammer is not hard though - quests are easy to do and not tedious, public quests are easy to get into, scenarios (arena type PvP) are xp gold mines, and realm vs. realm ("real" PvP) is awesome for gear.
It's probably the only RPG where I essentially farm other people for xp and loot.

Only if you make yourself like it. So far the Euro game has been fun running around, killing wantonly, etc. But the interface is still second generation MMO. They did not change it at all from the original design. It is integrated INTERNET EXPLORER windows and the UO backpack system complete with faulty stacking. Using action is a pain in the ass. The whole thing just makes me sick. I have fun when I ignore absolutely everything about the operation of the game, but in all honesty that is going to wear off so damn fast.

I played EU beta and some EU retail, ping isn't a huge issue.

Yeah if you want role play, free graphic games aren't the way to go. You can try Aeria Games You do have to pay to get anything decent, but the graphics aren't bad. Some of the writing is crap on the games, and the people who play them are often either daft or don't speak English. I played a few of them, but the only one that was a bit interesting was MegaTen, mostly because it was based on the Shin Megami Tensi games (You'd probably do better playing the console games instead). I think there are way you can earn things from their shop, but not as easily as here.
Earth Eternal might be the game you want, but it hasn't come out yet. Earth Eternal
Unless you want to pay it's better to go with console games and Lusternia.

Persona 3 and 4 are two of my favorite games of all time, for reasons I could philosophize upon for hours.
To change the nature of this thread, did you play 1 or 2 and was either good in respects to plot and immersion?

I love Guild Wars to bits. You pay to buy the initial game, but there are absolutely no fees or pay for perks or things of the sort. You buy the game and that's it. It's very pretty, graphics-wise, and it has a level cap at 20, so I feel like there's little to no grind in it for me. Especially in GW:Factions - leveling there went pretty quickly for me. Haven't played Prophecies, so I can't comment on it. I love playing Nightfall dervish (it seems like a really popular class though), but the leveling felt a little more difficult for me in the beginning. Still worth trying if you'd prefer a Middle Eastern theme over an Azn theme (which is what Factions has).
Shiri2009-03-07 10:04:05
Same as Nyir. Nightfall is the best campaign, missions work the best (i.e they're not time-limit based like factions), theme is more original (Africa/Middle East), the two classes are better than the factions extra 2 classes, etc. etc. HOWEVER the easiest pvp is in factions (alliance battles: 12v12 so noobs don't drag the whole team down quite so badly) so that one is probably better to start with.
You do have to pay once but yeah. (Prophecies is good on its own merits but boring compared to the other two, FYI, Nyir. I got 'em all, did pretty well in HA for a while.)
On a side note, Xiran was trying to convince me to play that Megaten game and I've been considering the persona games on PS2 once my new monitor gets here, so if anyone has more details on the MMO type you should post/PM!

Try UOGamers: Hybrid. Basically ultima online, but free and without the new fangled "enhancements" (Sodomy). Be very, very careful, red ganksquads roam common areas, so be ready to run like Daganev confronted with soap.

An Adventurer is you!
It has graphics. Really.
And alcohol, quests, item/weapon/armour manufacturing, six classes, holiday events and a Naughty Sorceress. What more would you ask for?

Ragnarok online is now a free game, and has been popular for a long time. I thought it was all right.

How the hell can you seriously say that GW:Factions is better than Prophecies? Factions was such gargage D:

I would enjoy KoL much more if it didn't have a turn limit.

I play World of Warcraft. I dabbled in Warhammer and found that while it was a little fun, the novelty wore off FAST and the classes were very poorly designed at the start. 'release mmo yaddah yaddah pushed release date to compete with Blizzard' - first rule of MMOs, right now: do not compete with WoW. You will get consumed and get screwed. Warhammer released too early and suffered for it. Since its release, though, it has drastically improved.
