Namegen is probably going to have been a bad idea, since many of the Kongregites are just going to pull a silly or unpronounceable name right of the list. If they wanted to give inspirational comparisons, they should have just listed a dozen or so names from NPCs of each race.

Why would somebody really MAKE a namegen, seeing as there are millions of them out on the Vast Expanses of the Internets™? I hope this wasn't the 'IRE-wide project' that interfered with actual, meaningful changes to the game.

Vhaas: More often than not, a newbie looking for a name is likely to find NAMEGEN or be referred to it through HELP NAMES, which has a disclaimer about its use. I would also expect the guides to explain that not all the names generated are necessarily appropriate. "It came from namegen" is never going to justify a patently rubbish name, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I see at least three typos in that quote.

I like the generator. It's a fun little thing, and I feel it will help people more than it will be used for idiocy. So long as pulling a name off namegen isn't proof against name rules violation, it will be fine I'm sure.

I was happy that Akui fit right in with the Aslaran names. Though she's seldom actually aslaran anymore... but still!

Also, mugwump names are amusing.

This was a little pet project of mine--I've been wanting a namegenerator that was unique to each race for years and this is the final product. The namegenerator that Fain is talking about was complete crap and this is something completely different.

Of course, with any random generator, you are going to have drek come out. It is up to the guides and playerbase to help shepherd newbies who use this tool (hmm, lleg is a bit awful.. what about modifying it to lleagia). However, this isn't only for newbies but also creative writers and builders who want to draw on names using the traditional racial culture. Anyway, some sounds of race names are completely unique, while some are inspired by real world cultures.

If you believe there are some races generate consistently poor names, let me know which ones and I'll work on improving it.

I don't think the namegen is a bad thing, it just can create really strange, unusable and funny names. Good overall, I really like it.

I think it's snazzy, it's the "drek" we like to laugh at. I think it should stay the way it is.

Frankly, I would've enjoyed having something like this around when I started playing. Not that I thought all that much about being dracnari when I started...
