Does anyone watch this? It's entertaining if taken at face value but here's my problem. Did they actually read more than the first two chapters? Holy what the .
This ing Sword of Truth series. What the were they thinking? It's one thing to miss a few points like a squidmonster in Watchmen, but holy ing this is unbelievably off-base. It's not like the actual plot wasn't able to be put into a series. I find myself entertained by the show but my soul cries tears of blood for the amount of rape perpetrated against the literary works.
Denna. You have got to be f'ing* kidding me with that crap. If you've read most of the series, the details of her death and subsequent choices in the afterlife are ing cornerstones of his entire existence. Get the out of here.
Pristinely Ungifted episode. WHAT?!
Book of Shadows + Boxes of Orden *WHAT* Jesus H Christ on a Pogostick.
K & R romance saga is a load of . They keep the "suspense" and tension by not telling the truth, especially with the "Remnant" episode. Come on.

After reading the entire series, I figured it was good, haven't watched this show yet.
However, did they at least put in the one redeeming, reliable thing we see in every book? Does someone try to rape Kahlan at least halfway through every book/episode/season? Lawl

I watched one episode, laughed at how bad it was and never looked back.
edit: By bad I mean completely inaccurate about the events that happen.

The first episode wasn't that bad, it mostly followed the beginning events of the first book to a T. I really thought the series was going to be amazing at that point.
Holy was I wrong.
For instance, wikipedia summarizes it better than I could in the book:
Giller
Giller is a Wizard of the Second Order and appears only in Wizard's First Rule. Giller gave his life to create Wizard's Life Fire, protecting Rachel and the last Box of Orden. He did so right before Darken Rahl could complete the final hook in the cut with which Rahl was performing his anthropomancy, thus depriving Rahl of the knowledge of the carrier of the box. The ashes left by Giller's Life Fire tasted sweet because he had given his life to defend another, instead of for selfish means, such as to spare himself pain.
Except in the show, he's one of Darken Rahl's wizards who uses a first order spell that only Zedd can cast (per zedd in the show) to invade Richard's dreams and try to the secret out of him by making Rahl look like his ex girlfriend.
That's how bad they are screwing it.
Denna kills his mother after she is resurrected when he kills her while breaking free, NOT FORGIVING HER TO CREATE THE WHITE SWORD OF TRUTH. . Richard unites the three boxes of Orden and commands them to fight eachother for justice. Really? I mean honest to God they could not this up more.
Diamondais2009-05-29 06:24:42
I ended up only able to find one of the episodes that followed, not the first.
Celina2009-05-29 07:18:28
Richard is hawt in the show.
Aerotan2009-05-29 07:39:26
Plus Rachel not going with Chase, Denna not ing dying, where the were the Mud People, the Sisters of Light in the Midlands, Richard, bloody, RAHL, multiple living confessors, Richard and the bloody Book of Counted ing Shadows, Rules 2-11 being ed up, RULES 2-11 BEING :censor:ED UP, The mess with the Box of Orden Yes, singular. Just all of it,
The only redeeming factor is I almost went Bi for Kahlan in Mord'Sith leather...

The show is your typical Hercules/Xena/Sinbad with slightly better special effects. If you try and match it to the books you will be horribly dissappointed. If you take it as a series that has the same general figures and world but a completely different story arc you will find yourself more able to enjoy the show.
Lucky for me it has been years since I read the series, so I can more easily take the show at face value, but I do recognise huge issues with the show compared to the books.

Just think of it as an 'alternate universe'. Worked for Star Trek...

I haven't read the books, but my wife read and liked all of them. We watched the first three episodes and gave up all hope for the series. Neither of us was at all interested to see if it might eventually improve.

You noticed this too? I approve.

Since I never read the books, I liked the show for it's adventure and fantasy. Some episodes were misses, but I found most of them to be enjoyable.
It doesn't hurt that Kahlan is hawt...so are the Mord-Siths.
I watched all of season 1 and I'll be sticking around for season 2.

I've never seen a single episode, and after reading all of this, I don't intend to.
I'm still pissed at how the last book worked out.

What part of loosely based dont you get?
Its on network tv, what do you expect anything other than Xena/Hercules cornball escapades? Do you honestly think they could be true to the source material (which is actually pretty in my opinion) on network tv? Seriously?
I've watched a few episodes, some of the better being Denna & Conversion. You can watch them all on Hulu.

Sure, there's enough content for multiple seasons contained within all the books. It would be better if they didn't flirt with book concepts and just stuck to the "loosely based" part of it. Think about it like this, Hercules and Xena still adhered to a certain set of circumstances and realities to do with Greek Mythos. Let's say Hercules meets a gorgon. This gorgon kills expendable soldier_01 by looking at him, but instead of turning to stone he turns into a giant penis. That's pretty much how badly changed the Boxes of Orden are. Why change them so much? What possible gain is there from screwing the boxes of orden? I can see not trying to rape Kahlan every episode or working in certain characters, but still, tons of it is just wrongwrongwrong and it's like those things are aimed at people who read the books. You catch things that people who have no book knowledge would catch.
Big TG started out when the series went into production saying he was going to be involved in the process and fans wouldn't be disappointed, but some things would be compromised due to episode format. What's he say now? Don't write me, I wasn't included in any decision and the show is a horrid Kahlan-surprise-sex of my literary works.
Aerotan2009-05-30 00:04:04
See one of the big arguments with "just take it at face value" is that that violates one of the principles set forth in the books. Pretty blatantly.
They completely changed the Boxes of Orden, they (apparently) removed subtractive magic, they boned the way confessors worked (Zedd should have died with the "mother confessor", since the devotion lasts beyond the death of the confessor associated with it. I believe Kahlan herself explained that in the books.), and given the changes that were made, it's going to be nearly impossible to stick to the source material moving forward. You say the changes were minor, but they really weren't. Like, at all. The seemingly minor changes they made to the plot of the first book cripple the subsequent ones, especially concerning the Mord'Sith and Richard's father...

The nerdrage will subside, in due time. Just give it time.
Unknown2009-05-30 02:54:23
Wow. Ok. I'm glad I hadn't caught this show yet. I could've sworn it was supposed to be a close adaptation of the books. This sounds like the usual milking of a successful franchise.
Unknown2009-05-30 12:14:17
Um... all of these books are absolutely terrible. "Literary works"? What are you smoking? I read the first five when I was sixteen because I ran out of good books and my parents kept buying them. One can imagine that a TV show based on a laughable series of books will be even more euugh.
It's dumb, mediocre fantasy at its most dumb and mediocre. I threw them all on my bottom shelf along with The Wheel of Time.
