Update. We have in fact, left the house. Can't take the cats with us. We're currently with some friends, nothing has happened yet. There has been much discussion about exactly how far the house is from the dam. Basically, if the dam breaks, it likely won't destroy the house, but with no flood insurance, it would likely destroy any money, and we'd be heavily in debt. And I gotta hope the cats are smart enough to get up on the counters
Talked with country free-holder, who doesn't know anymore then us. Meer I...I really don't want the house to flood. We don't even have close to enough money to fix that, ever

Nothing else you could do to raise the funds needed if it broke? Like, I dunno, sue whoever owns the dam?
Shulamit2011-03-01 21:08:33
One, I'm not the type to sue. Two, I think it's the cities, eh? And three, this is what homeowners insurance is for.
Lawliet2011-03-01 21:43:53
In general I'd not be the sort to sue either, but then if someone's going to build a big ol' structure that if compromised could destroy many many peoples homes and possibly kill a few people off too I'd bloody better keep it in good nick.
Even if it is the cities I'm sure there's some sort of legal action you could take if their negligence destroys your house.

Just recently called fiance's brother, who we only recently realized has connections in news, who he used to call people and ask what the hell is going on. Apparently, there was an inspection of the dam, it was leaking under the dam (it looked weird when you actually go and look at it) but apparently, they've got it under control, and have given the stand down signil as of last notice. I'm really hoping that's the last of all these issues, meer.

Mm. That's a relief to hear, Shulamit.
Razenth2011-03-01 22:00:31
Yes it is!
Sadly, infrastructure across the United States is falling apart because states don't have enough money to maintain them. So... you might want to consider moving to a place less prone to flooding in the future.

I don't want to move, and there's still the whole issue of no money to make a move with The only way the house could flood is if the dam did have a catastrophic failure, otherwise, we're too far from the river, and too high up for it too flood.
Razenth2011-03-01 22:05:18
Then investment in sandbags may be in order. Lots and lots of sandbags.
Shulamit2011-03-01 22:07:48
I can do that! Mom's old house was at the shore. It flooded once. That was more amusing then bad though then, since the flooding never got up into the house proper (the house at the shore was the highest around, the flooding got into the laundry room which was the only room at ground level). It was amusing because me and sister look down into the laundry room and say, "Why are there fishes in the dryer, mom?" Heeeh. But yeah,, was scared until fiance's brother got all the information for us.

This horrible, horrible headache that I have. Why must I be plagued with headaches and lack of sleep? Argh.

I think my laptop is dying. And I really don't have the cash to get a new on, coupled with the difficulty of landing a job.

Hope it hangs longer, or you get enough cash to get a new one soon. Sometimes cooing at it works. Heh. I remember mine living for at least half a year more before it suddenly decided to die on me. No way of having it repaired since the unit has been pulled out of production, and no spare parts were available anywhere.
Most of my schoolmates in High School are graduating..one even graduated with honors (earning him an advertisement tarpaulin for our High School) in a school that has way, way lower standards than the university I'm in. I, on the other hand, am already delayed a year since every failed major subject causes you an automatic one-year delay because all major subjects are seasonal. There's a rule that you can only extend for two more years from the regular four-year-long course before the school kicks you out, and while other campuses are lenient about that, my campus unluckily is one of the strict followers of the rule. I can't even transfer to another campus because the course I'm in isn't available in the other campuses. Aaaand, I'm waiting here praying they decide to finally pass me. I'll deal with all the endorsements, just as long as I graduate next year. And I was so happy so long ago when I found out I passed in this university..now the whole place seems like a total nightmare.

Wait wait... so a university forces you to stop paying them money to attend classes? That makes no sense to me. Funding must not be a problem.

I've had this horrible cramp in my right hand for the past two days or so, down my thumb and into the palm of my hand. My typing is going like 1/3 of its usual speed to avoid horrible pain, and doing just about everything sucks because what is there to do that does not involve my dominant hand in some way? I haven't gotten on Lusternia because all of the enjoyable things involve lots of typing so bluh. Bluhhh...

It seems to me that, if people keep failing classes and have to keep extending their stay at the university, they have to keep paying the university for the classes and everything else associated with them. It seems counterproductive from the business side (which is the only side that seems to count in too many institutions today) to tell someone that they can no longer attend the university after a certain number of years--that person will then no longer be paying the university.

My university back home has policies that if you fail too many classes, you will no longer be able to return for the next year and you have to reapply to be welcomed back. Sure, they may make money off you, but at the same time, if you fail too much, you're not really helping them either and you're probably a waste of resources that could be spent on perceived better students.
Sylphas2011-03-03 14:32:05
I have too low of a GPA to attend my local community college, even if I change majors and reapply completely. They only let you wipe like once every so many years, which seems even more stupid. (Yes, I should stop skipping classes.)

They are laying off a quarter of business support staff where I work by the end of this month. A further round to follow in September. This is a direct result of the government cuts.
Bad times.
