Going to see how long I can go before I flip out and cut my own hair off again.
Haha, I'm doing the same.

Utah. So, I don't think the cheap place to live is worth it, personally.
Ouch........
Utah is a great place to live. We've got low crime rates, an economy that is still above the national average, and beautiful country. The main reason people don't like it here is there aren't a lot of bars, and you can't get beer with more than 3% alcohol. I guess since I don't drink it doesn't affect me as much. The people here are generally pretty nice. Most of the rude people I've encountered are the outsiders anyway who come in and look down on everybody who isn't from Cali or from back east.
And yes, $175 a month for my rent. I have to pay for water/electric, but get free cable and high speed internet. I share a bedroom with 1 roommate and the basement with 3 others, making 5 of us total. It's fully furnished on top of that. Granted, most other apartments in town were in the $200-400 range, this was a really good deal.

I think Cas is more bent over the Mormon and ultra-conservative angle.

To be fair, only like 5 people know the religious and/or philosophical leanings of the Casilu, so you could be right, or that could be a great benefit.

Give me lambic or give me death! Or at least something similarly tasty. I like my temperate forests too much to really consider anything west of the Mississippi, which is mainly why I haven't looked into Utah.

Meh, if you move to Salt Lake City, there is an ever-increasing liberal and non-mormon population there. In fact, my congressional district(which includes Salt Lake City, despite me being 300 miles to the south) is currently represented by Jim Matheson(D) in Congress, and it's because of Salt Lake City really.

I would like to gain weight. If I skip a meal, I lose 10 pounds. Some of you may be jealous of this, but I'm here to tell you-- as a dude who's 23 and well beyond the awkward teenage years, not being able to put on a normal amount of weight is frustrating as hell. Forget muscle mass, too. That's nigh impossible unless I have a magical refilling protein shake glued to my hand.
edit: I don't ACTUALLY lose 10 pounds if I skip a meal. That was hyperbole.

I know this is from a couple days ago but I'm right here with ya man. Wish I could gain you know 60 pounds, but can't gain more than 5 before I burn through all my food budget and am set going back to eating what I can afford.

Last semester I paid $125 for a collection of loose pages bound by plastic wrap, so I couldn't even experience the joy of getting $10 back for it, because they will not accept such "books" at the textbook return. :

As a CS major, I didn't have to buy anything starting my second year, after I got all my general ed. stuff out of the way.
Diamondais2011-08-22 22:47:12
The university library always carries the books I need, so I've not bought any since my second year and even then, I only ever bought half of them that I felt I really needed.

Having once had a burning hatred for the bookstore during my first year of college, I have since realized after working at a campus bookstore, that the professors are to blame for idiocy. Generally, the reason you end up with $150 looseleaf books that you can't sell back is: Professor is using a normal book > Publisher rep comes to campus to persuade professors to switch to this amazing new bundle! (stifles used book market, increases publisher revenue) > Professors are so impressed by the power of loose-leaf books, they adopt those for their courses.
Also, I always hated the professors who never decided what books they wanted until the end of May (when their choices were due in March), so that at the beginning of May when everyone is selling books back, students don't get paid as much since the book isn't being used on campus in the coming semester (until 2 weeks later when the professor finally decides to send their order in).

I'm buying what I can on Ebay or Amazon. I had to buy my CIS 2100 books new though at the bookstore. They cost $200 together. Then I bought my Business Law book for $180. My Microeconomics book would be $200 in the bookstore. But my awesome professor from Bangladesh was mocking the bookstore and told us to buy a previous edition on Ebay for $15. He pointed out to us that NOTHING changed over the editions but the color scheme.
My Managerial Accounting book would have been $180, but I paid $115 shipped on Amazon, and I'm currently bidding on one for my Intro to Business class. The bid is at $4.25 right now, with my max set at $15. If I can't get it for that, i'll buy it at the store for $30.
College is a rip off, plain and simple. Teachers have gotten greedy and impossible to fire or lay off. Book are ridiculously expensive.

Well, I feel happy in knowing that I do have at least one professor that laughs off books and just puts one down so the admin leave them alone and say it's completely unnecessary and what's needed can be found within the library for free or in a special folder he sets aside.
He also refuses to use his own books, because of the price they get assigned.
Yay head of department Geography prof.
