I died during mine, on astral, and consider discovering that death is not a big deal to be worthwhile information.
The importance of the planar structure of the game is unique to Lusternia among IRE games, so learning that other planes exist, even if they're something you won't be exploring for some time, is a nice tidbit as well.

Maybe not at first, but level 90+ enemy territory deaths and disconnects-followed-by-0-mana seem like a pretty big deal to me.
Anyway... yeah, I guess you learn a few quick things from the task, and are forced to reach out to commune members a bit. Good enough, I suppose.

When I take people for the planar quest, I cubix for speed, and simply point out features like the ethereal archways and things like that so they know where they are.
Aoife2010-05-28 11:26:11
I try to say a little bit about each plane, and rush through Astral and Faethorn so no one dies.

I hope no Serens are doing the novice's planar quests for them. We help them to the Moon Bubble (so we get the "forced interaction" part, which teaches the lesson "sometimes you need help"), but barring circumstances like distorted gates, we only provide advice and explanation, not actual travel, for the rest.

Are you having them skip Astral, then? With Gaudiguch we can't, really, unless I'm remembering the point requirements/values incorrectly (I really do need to make an alt just to go through the collegium and write myself a step-by-step guide...).
Rael2010-05-28 13:58:03
I always take my novices up to Astral and I have to be like, "I'm going to lose you now, count to 30 after I touch the pool and follow my lead. Once you're in be quick about dropping your seeds and PORTALS out before the astral winds shred you to pieces!" |b
Also the first time I did my planar task Ishant and I popped into a room with Vathael and he cracked our skulls open. Yay, welcome to Lusternia.
It's a little convoluted and the experience is probably more confusing than educational.

That it is.
My first experiences with planar travel involved yelling at a large tree, conversing with waterfalls, and climbing into feathers.

I dread the planar quest. Those damn two-headed eagles on Gemini have it out for me, I can't kill them and they know it. Anyway. When I take them by myself, I talk about things a bit and answer questions, but when I convince people to help clear the eagles off Astral I find myself unable to say anything because everyone just wants to get it done as quick as possible. Probably terrifying the poor novice with all the talk about how dangerous things are
Don't be afraid little ones, Phoebus is just pathetically bad at fighting things! You (probably) won't die...!

Yeah, the Moon Bubble lets ours avoid Astral. (Good thing in its way since the only way we can get to Astral is via the Moon Bubble, usually.)
Sylphas2010-05-28 17:22:47
You're apparently the only one who makes them do it on their own then. Especially since fresh newbies can't get to Cosmic to complete it.
Lendren2010-05-28 17:40:10
They don't need Cosmic to complete it either.
Shame to hear that all the other guilds aren't paying attention to the CGHELPs, but with so much turnover in GAs, it's hard to maintain any consistency.

Faethorn, Water, Earth, Etherwilde, Moonbubble, and somewhere else. Cosmic or Astral. It's why I asked for Fire and Air to count. Unless I'm really missing something and the people that I've asked while they were doing it are also wrong.

Your nexus world.

Ah, right. I've still been told by people doing it that it wasn't enough, because I was studiously avoiding taking them anywhere they couldn't survive on their own. Huh.

I don't recall going to astral or cosmic when I went with you on one of my characters, but I'd have to look again at the communes planar quest. You shouldn't have to go too far.
Everiine2010-05-28 17:56:03
I think the problem is that you have to go with a novice, because if you don't, they are liable to be jumped as they wander around trying to find their way. I've been with a novice numerous times and we've been jumped, and I've not been the first target. This is no longer a place where newbies are given consideration for being such.
Diamondais2010-05-28 17:57:52
Okay, I looked it over.
You can finish it with Nexus World (25), Ethereal Serenwilde (25), Moon Bubble (25), Faethorn (15), Earth (5), Water (5) for Serenwilde (and probably Glomdoring too but not looking at theirs at the moment)

A few months ago we had a run of Seren novices being harassed in Faethorn, but it was pretty brief. During hai'Gloh/Xion Initiative times, they were harassed on the elemental planes, but that's long done. Even then, most novices were immune due to Grace of Innocence. Nowadays, I see Seren novices doing it alone all the time without being bothered (and I hope Gloms can say the same thing).
In fact, most of the time I hear of a novice getting into a fracas on the Planes quest it's because they're travelling in the company of a notorious war criminal and baby-eater like me or Everiine. They're probably safer alone than with us, especially if they still have Grace.
Finding the elemental gateways is hard without a MAP but pretty easy with one. Very few novices really need anyone to explain how to do it (and we have plenty of people to explain for those that do). I think it's better to help them do it than to do it for them, and that's been the policy in the collegium for a long time, but since the collegium has no newsboard or anything, and its CGHELPs are visible to the novices, it's hard to keep these things coordinated while GAs keep turning over. So everyone does their own thing these days, more's the pity.

Man, your novices have it easy. Our novices have to climb uphill barefoot in the snow both ways.
