Same here, it's a pain in the ass to check for vials and herbs, though herbs are easier than vials. If they don't have it, then, sucks to be them when it comes to a time they'll need it. If they mention they forgot it, I tell them to run and go get it and I'll wait.

I don't think there is a good or bad way to do exams. You get a help file listing exactly what you need to do to pass the exam. If you don't have something and your examiner chooses to make an issue of it, it's still your fault since you knew ahead of time. If your examiner doesn't feel like making a huge deal out of something (I learned early that I'd rather tell someone to go go buy some herbs and a vial after the exam rather than waiting for 10 while you run to a bunch of shops), then that's their call too. Aaaaaand, if you don't care about guild rank, then don't be bothered by what guild exams expect you to know.

There is a number of things I want to do IG (designs, writing, etc) but I just have so little motivation lately.

Since I am apparently allowed to speak more freely about quests, I'm trying to free Joiya. So, I need to go to Ethereal and find that shield, which wouldn't ordinarily be a problem (I really don't mind poking around everywhere) except... I can't climb trees (or fly. )

Oh and lately, people have been killing Lanikai and blowing up the Cay of Cloadhi, but I don't even mind restarting the quest before that point. At least it gives me something to do.

EDIT: So, in the event that I get to that point again... Serens are allowed to help me free Joiya, right? I don't know what else to say if they ask why I need to be up in Faethorn's trees.

What's up with the weave being like a half hour overdue?

Don't need to do one side to do the other. There might be a cooldown, sure, but you don't need to do good side to unlock bad side and vice versa.
