That clothing such as pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, etc. counts as the same layer of clothing as robes is frustrating. I would like to be able to wear other things besides robes, without having to forsake basic equipment requirements. The tailors design some really pretty things, and there should be more opportunity to show them off.
So, what if robes remained as a design, but instead were just a regular garment? Tailors instead could add something to existing articles at this clothing layer which would give them the 12/12 protection stats of basic robes, and consequently allow them to be enchanted and take proofings. It could then simply check to make sure that people are not wearing more than one item which has been imbued this way by the tailor.
Another solution would simply be to make robes an independent layer of clothing, which would still allow people to wear other things... but I think the first one is more interesting!
It seems very strange to me that we have a whole skillset of tailoring, and yet there are only 2 actual outfits worn in Lusternia... robes and armor. Doing it this way would also allow for a more standard cost for this protection, as now there's a huge difference between 100 cloth and 100 silk + gold, silver, etc., or the various designs of robes.

I wear a belt, boots, boxers, gloves, coat, cloak, and ecclesiastical stole in addition to my robes.

You can't wear pants under great robes because I like to sit in Havens and throw heavy gusts of winds up under robe wearers. Muahahaha.
Llandros2009-06-16 18:52:33
I'm not sure they'll allow pants under robes because some leather and chainmail pants count as armor.

I've been wanting this a long time.
And armor should be on the same level as robes, so you could wear pants and shirts under that too. I mean, armor against skin?
ewww

You can wear undergarments under armour. Ev wears a loincloth under his, so at least some clothing can be worn under armour, and possibly robes. Even though it doesn't affect me I would also like to see clothing be able to be worn under robes.
Unknown2009-06-16 20:29:02
I've also been wanting this for a long time. I'd personally like to see robes on its own layer, with pants/shirt/tunic/dresses underneath. I imagine it'd be easier to code than having proofings/enchantments done to every single type of clothing... maybe?
Razenth2009-06-16 21:04:09
Ifyou wear robes on top, why wear clothes underneath? No one's ever going to see it except your mudsex partner...

Well, sure, in a purely game mechanic way. But, imagine in your head that you're wearing what amounts to a big padded dress... with just your underpants on underneat. And you fly..... Plus, some of the designs are written with open fronts!
Even if you want to get away from the roleplay aspect of it, Talan made a good point about how other kinds of clothes - the ones that aren't accessories or undergarmets or shoes, stuff like shirts and tunics and pants and skirts and dresses and so on, just aren't used a lot because folks have to choose between them and their fighting gear and most folks choose the fighting gear.

You want like other IRE armors where you just wear whatever you want and armor over/on top?

Why not?
Kelysa2009-06-16 21:40:16
Well, it's possible, but armor sucks. Robes already do have a pretty wide range of versatility for style, and if you really want something covering yoru legs, stockings DO show through robes. Or socks.

Oh, I counted robes as armor in that question.

Because I have the hardest time in the world imagining everyone wearing robes a la Fransciscan friars. No matter how many descriptions I read, I always imagine robes like the ones Jedi wear, with open fronts.

Obligatory robe showoff >_>
Airy and sheer, these robes sheathe the form in a smooth, resplendent
ripple of chiffon. Dyed a smoky black, sterling accents shimmer off its
surface where it clings delicately to the form, ambient sparkles set off
by plays of light. Wispy, billowing strands extend where the material
ends abruptly at the elbows and knees, flaring out in an ethereal skirt
and sleeves that drift languidly with the wearer's movements. Argent
glyphs representing the lunar cycle are dusted subtly in shimmering
moonstone, arching across the bodice and down the small of the back. A
long swathe of fabric coils near the head, to be left hanging freely or
pulled over as a translucent veil.

This would also have more people designing robes where you could see the clothing underneath instead of designing robes to look like the clothing you would rather be wearing.

How about you add an outerlayer2 (assuming cloaks/coats are outerlayer right now) that has both greatrobes and armor, and let everything else be mainlayer, then undergarments. I agree, it doesn't really make sense for people to run around in jedi-like robes when all they can wear beneath that are in any way modest are slips, if I remember right ( as I recall designing a few for this purpose...). simple solution, it works, people still wear everything they normally would, plus anything else. Personally, I'd have Mir wear more dresses (I've got a closetful left from when she was a tailor) if it were easier to just pull off a set of greatrobes with a dress/shirt/pants underneath. of course I'd still wear the robes for fighting, but It'd be easier if I didn't have to change completely every time I just wanted to switch to a set of clothes that could be worn under robes.
I know there've been several previous threads about this, glad the support is finally here!

EDIT: And, of course, still have coats/cloaks on the outermost layer, and robes/plate on the one beneath that. Example, from innermost to outer:
Undergarments
regular clothes
plate/robes
coat/cloak

Undershirts in general... none of the garments are moderately shirt-like that cover just chest/gut.
