ANNOUNCE NEWS #1351
Date: 7/6/2009 at 22:56
From: Roark Libertas
To : Everyone
Subj: Aethership Changes
+ The size of the Parallax Arena has been dramatically reduced.
+ SHIP LOOK will show you other ships docked with you when on a
wilderness dock.
+ Gnome ships do not wander about as far.
+ Instead of vortices flinging randomly in aetherspace, it randomly
produces a creature that drains power as one of its attacks. There is
also a new way to siphon that gives you more energy than normal but has
the old risk of being flung about. See the AB help file for siphon.
+ Spawning creatures produces a message to all players aboard the ship
that spawns it when the ship enters the location.
+ Only the ship prompt is visible when locked in a module.
+ New feature: CONFIG SHIPSIGHT. If you set the step to 3 then
you will see the room details every 3rd ship move. If you set it to 4
then you will see it every 4th move, etc. Setting it to 1 means you see
every move, if you don't mind the spam. Setting it to 0 means you never
see it. Note that everyone currently is defaulted to 0.
This is the first part of aetherspace changes that have been scheduled.
Look out for more in the future!

Man, am I ticked. The aethership changes in the ANNOUNCE have completely disabled my ability to sail. I have to do some serious work on my system before I'm going to be able to leave the Facility and sail back to prime.

Why? Nothing there seems like something that should interfere with basic flying, or be a detriment in any way. Do you just mean you have triggers to update or something?
Esano2009-07-07 11:07:10
I think these changes are definitely a move in the right direction.
Energy linking is now viable (beforehand, trying to take a large ship meant almost definitely being flung halfway across Aetherspace), although we'll need to see how often power draining monsters are created and how much power they drain.
Shipsight is definitely useful. Small, fast ships with highly skilled pilots are now useful, especially with things like miniwindows that furthermore slow down processing. Beforehand you could lag yourself out gliding.
The gnome ship change? I don't know how many people are going to notice this anyway, as we no longer have an easy access to particles to trade - while you can theoretically get them from trading, I don't think anyone's going to make the effort at the moment. This looks like a change that will be more useful depending upon later changes.

I played around with it and like the changes to ship movement. Cutting down on spam is helpful, although you might need to adjust the shipsight steps on the fly to let you be able to navagate smaller spaces.

I can't remotely type PILOT STEER SE, PILOT STEER S, etc. fast enough. If I tried that I'd get eaten by aether critters every time. So I have the sailing equivalent of speedwalking. And I pump out a command when I get a prompt (and have balance, etc.). But now the prompt is gone. My prompt hook doesn't get called. This messes up every command generated by my system, not just the speedsailing, though very few other commands make sense while sailing.
I had to put in dual prompt hooks which indicate the prompt type, and then when I parse the prompt check the type and parse differently depending on which type.
It would have been nice if removing the prompt had been made optional.

You make sound reeeeally complicated. I want to try Aetherspace travelling, but I play on Nexus most of the time.

The aethership prompt is still there. It should be as easy as removing the reference to the old prompt. Alternatively, you can keybind your piloting macros and put it in a class that's easily disabled.
Llandros2009-07-07 15:00:17
Yikes, learn gliding. It makes things so much easier.
Fania2009-07-07 15:19:12
I like that they are making changes so Aethercrafting wont die out. Keep up the good work!

you can! Catch Ilaveuse, Mirami, and/or Pelas when they're awake, and we can go flying again. Pelas and I are exclusively nexus at the moment; Ilaveuse started there, but he left the Mac world for MUSH...
Suffice to say, you -can- sail in nexus, and empath, and turret!

But now the prompt is gone.
In addition to what other people said about using things like GLIDE or triggering on a different thing, you might want to bug this. Maybe they didn't intend not seeing the map to also make you not see the prompt.
Dysolis2009-07-07 16:54:50
Wait a sec so large ships got flung into the void more often?

You get glaetherial dust from killing aether beasts, just as always. Nothing has changed as far as I know, so why is there no longer easy access? If you aren't familiar with gnome trading, look it up! I should note that the gold available from gnome trading has been dramatically increased so you should definitely see a big difference.
Kiradawea2009-07-07 17:01:24
I think that's one of the changes that are gonna make knowing where the Gnome ships are more worthwhile.

I think the change being referred to is no longer getting particles from weakenings, since there are no weakenings.
Shiri2009-07-07 17:06:36
The main thing we did with trading before was get our particles by farming our own weakenings, then take them to a gnome ship and get spheres, then come back. Now we can't do that. The other kind of trading is really rare. But we'll see!
Estarra2009-07-07 17:07:59
The main form of gold gathering should have _always_ been from gnome trading with glaetherial dust. Let me know if it's not lucrative and we can adjust it again (though there has already been a big adjustment).
Llandros2009-07-07 17:14:02
Does Aether hunting benefit from the squad xp bonus?
Also, i think some of the trouble people were having with aetherhunting had to do with their ships. Massive ships built for pvp combat aren't nearly as good as a more sleaked down ship with just the essentials for hunting.

I wish there wasn't a penalty for having a larger manse. It makes it difficult to decide if you want to expand your manse, or stick with your 1 room speed ship. I've stuck with my 1 room ship for a long time, another reason being that expanding my manse and adding aethership stuff to it would be kind of useless, since it would be rare for me to find a crew to use those things. I'm much better off having my 1 room ship that I can fly solo to get to places.
Also: I think a new aetherbubble called "Vulcan" should be added.

I should note that this is the first stage of aethership changes so keep an open mind.
Regarding Vulcan, in this quantum reality it was blown up by ... oh wait ...
