One of the big problem I see with a lot of the major org quests (IE: Hai'gloh and XI) is "new toy syndrome". Something new comes out and "OOOHHHHHHHH MA GYAWD! WE GOTTA HAVE IT!!! WE GOTTA DO IT!!! WE GOTTA TRY! AWWWHHH MA GYAWD!"
Enter Hai'gloh and XI, the new toys in our toy box. Within a few RL days, the entire political landscape of Basin changes: Celest and Seren break their long time alliance, Glom and Mag's treaty is fed to the dogs, Celest allies with Mag, Seren allies with Glom; Magnagorans who have been enemies of Celest since 2004 and would have probably required a payment to the city in the range of hundreds of thousands of gold, a full city referendum and full agreement of the entire council to be unenemied, are unenemied in a heart beat, and vice versa, and everything changes. New toy. Old toys are completly forgotten, as everyone wants to play with the new toy.
Now that novelty is wearing off it seems. It's been done, it's been tried, now it's not as fun. Well, the old toys are buried, so no sense in digging them out. Life becomes very quiet. Probably over the next several RL months, Celest and Mag, and Glom and Seren will cool off, the Alliances will grow, laws and attitudes will soften, friendships will be made etc. etc. etc.
Oh sure, someone will whip their side and say "Let's screw the other side with. We need the power, and there's not a lot of them in the realms." So it will be done. The other side will do their thing, it will wear off, it will be fixed, but the lethargy will creep up again.
Then we get a new toy. This time, Seren can work with Mag in a way that allows the two to screw Celest and Glom. Overnight, the political landscape will change again as Seren and Mag ally, and Celest and Glom ally.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
I think one way to counteract this is make these XIs and Hai'Glohs and whatevers progressive. You do step 1, which screws your enemies and helps you. You can now do step 2, which further screws your enemies and helps you. You can now do step 3, each step becoming more and more lucrative, more and more difficult for you to do, and easier and easier for your enemies to undo. Perhaps even make it that if you reach a certain step the first time, you'll get a permanent boon to your side, that can't be removed.
I think this will prevent conflict quests from going out style so quickly, which I think I'm already noticing with HG and XI.

Interesting.
I wonder what the affect would be of going back to some of the old toys and spicing them up a bit?
I bet there are like 10 -20 very large quests that people don't even attempt anymore that used to be "really important".

Quests that come to mind:
Magnagora Zoo quests
Centaur quests
Stingray quest /raising the emproer I think?
Ebonglomwyrm quest
seawolves vs dragon turtles
Rowena's youth potion quest
That girl that was in the mountains and would suck people's power
The plague quests
honeycomb fae quests
And that's just the quests that I can think of from back in the day that I was actually playing the game on a regular basis. I can't imagine what it's like now.

...
Are you serious? Most of these quests are still done. Some of them are even required for the hai'Gloh.
Daganev2009-08-20 01:41:33
Which are still done? Perhaps they made a comeback, cause when I stopped playing, none of these were done often.
Vathael2009-08-20 01:44:35
my fine to celest was 1 million gold... until i rejoined mag.

The honeycomb quest is required for hai'Gloh.
Seawolves and such are still done (not much, but the battle still happens regularly, and the ships and spectres are done every so often). Marani was raised a couple of times recently. We have to make Rowena her potion allllllll the time. The Ebonglom Wyrdling quest is only not done frequently because we dropped a ton of guards at him. Etc, etc.

Quests that come to mind:
Magnagora Zoo quests - to raise the Necromantate? Still done when one is needed.
Centaur quests - People do it but I'm not really sure what the negative and positive effects are.
Stingray quest /raising the emproer I think? - done for the line but doesn't have a effect.
Ebonglomwyrm quest - not sure what this is
seawolves vs dragon turtles - Could pretty much be considered left over code at this point. You can do it but it does nothing.
Rowena's youth potion quest - Not sure what this is
That girl that was in the mountains and would suck people's power - Because it just hurts everyone and is only done by people who want everyone to hate them.
The plague quests - not sure what this is. That other village and the plague lord stuff? I think people still do that.
honeycomb fae quests - Is this part of Hai'Gloh?

You have to do the sea quests to do Marilynth / Ladantine for the line. Otherwise I filled in the blanks for you, I think. Pretty much all of them are still done.
And yes, Soulforge was done a couple weeks ago.

Doesn't stop someone from doing TBC.

TBC benefits the org that does it. I don't see how the two are related.
Unknown2009-08-20 10:45:43
Excuse me, I enjoy doing the Sea quests. Do not touch
Unknown2009-08-21 01:58:05
If I'm reading this right, Globglob counts, and he's still raised with some amount of regularity.
But yes, when Ladantine(?)'s ship was raised a few months ago, no one had any clue what to do in Celest. Perhaps new incentives for doing old org quests? There could easily be an event to promote them without actually changing the code.

I remember raising Marilynth, and I think it took over three RL days before people brought her down, because raising her does zilch except give you a fancy honours line and create some noise.

Busted! Yeah it was, but before that it's rarely done.
