So, I'm looking at the new system, and one thing immediately strikes me:
There are no checks-and-balances.
A system for rankings of NPC kills is great, and really hard to abuse. Ranking PK deaths, on the other hand, has a great potential to lead to headaches if there is no kind of check on what is allowed and what's not.
We have some very competitive players. I'm not sure that giving players more incentive to jaunt into Faethorn/Earth/Water to kill lowbies hunting for essence or gathering Fae is really what we want. And, before it's said that won't happen-- it already happens for "fun." Getting points in a ranking system is, therefore, more incentive. For a death to count, the person should probably be above a certain level and within a certain amount of might of the person doing the kill (at least, for it to count as anything on the RANKINGS KILLS and RANKINGS DEATHS).
Further, an ability to "opt out" of the PK part if it remains would be nice. Your deaths don't count, your kills don't count, you just don't exist as far as the rankings are concerned. Let people enjoy them if they want, and compete with each other, but leave the rest of us out of it if we don't want to participate! Thanks!
Whether someone is participating or not could potentially show up in honours (Ranked # in the kill rankings for example, like the combat rankings), and if you opt out you lose all points earned (so you can't opt out to avoid a death-count, then opt back in and keep your points).
There are no checks-and-balances.

It took about 5 minutes from when the system went in for Jozen to immediately get Garm or whatever. Then again, noob killers are noob killers with or without a ranking system.
But hey yeah, definitely abuseable. I agree with the opt in/out and the might relativity as well.

I did find myself wondering about this coming along just as we're complaining about too much people attacking people for the sake of attacking people.
Lehki2009-09-18 22:42:58
A bit off-topic, but is Mobile Kills supposed to be tracking NPC's killed? Because it's not for me.
Charune2009-09-18 22:44:05
Mobile kill tracking is not enabled at this time. Suppose I should change it so it doesn't display Mobile Kills, etc.

Yeah, I liked Achaea's STATUS STATS (something like that) where it actually told you how many mobs you killed in your lifetime, the total level of mobs you killed and average level.

Is there something like that in-game already?
Xenthos2009-09-19 14:34:06
So, yeah. Apparently overnight there was a raid on the Nexus Worlds.
Now, at this point in time, the Nexus Worlds are useless. There is nothing on them to raid... except people, of course. They've not been raided in ages.
Yet, with this incentive added in and no kind of checks, you've got people harvesting Evaine for points. Note that she's a whopping 25% of my might, and I'm not even omni-trans.
I'm pretty sure we wanted more sane raiding, not more people-harvesting... :/
The might-check is sorely needed, as is the ability to opt out of the whole PK-part of the system.

At least now we have a measure of aggression, so you can see who's doing all the fighting...

Except that it's just encouraging them to do even more of it... their reward, rank 1 on the Grief-Charts.
(Which is, at this point, all this chart is going to be... heh. Who can grief the most lowbies)
Unknown2009-09-19 15:03:33
I groaned when I first read the announce.
I'm going to summarize all my thoughts into a point Xenthos made earlier, don't drag everyone into PK if they don't want it.

I know it didn't seem like it, but I was agreeing with you completely... by pointing out that we can now definitively point to who does the most griefing.

That would be acceptable if the opt-out was complete and defaulted to opt-out for new characters (via a Config option, maybe). Since then it ends up being pretty much the same thing as a might-check.
If there is no opt out there has to be might-checking, though. I'd prefer the opt-out if only one is picked.
