I so have the Moral high ground. I have the freaking Moral Everest here. My last kill was in JANUARY.
You might have the moral high ground, but it sounds like you are at the bottom of the combat canyon.

(Can you hold the moral high ground in regards to PK when you are incapable of real PK? That is, we suppose every person to be innocent of not committing murders for as long those persons do not commit murders. But should we congratulate them for not committing murders, too? THESE are the questions to consider.)

I will say it again...
Kills/deaths is good. We almost all do that anyways with scripts and heck we have threads where we are posting out kills/deaths to e-peen or show how "good" we are about not killing newbs. So there is zero issue with the game tracking this information for us.
Rankings Kills/deaths is the problem. It has caused kill farming, and griefing for the purpose of point gains and is generally a nice idea on paper and a bad idea in reality.
So... we don't need to code fancy ins and outs for this. Why waste coder resources on "fixing" a flawed system, (when there are major game issues that need addressing and coding resources), that only matter to those who want to fall into the "farm for kills" category, when we can end all this nonsense and just turn off Rankings kills/deaths?
I am sorry, Charune, you coded something that in another player-base may have worked out, unfortunately, not in ours. Nice, fun idea that just ended badly.

(The moral high ground of PK in this case is killing lowbies. I chose not to put the effort in to fight, but there really is nothing stopping me from re-stocking my venoms and jumping some newbs with 15% of my might.)

Hi. How are you?
Daganev2009-09-21 04:46:44
My goodness....
Firstly, I'd just like to laugh at all the people who are calling this a "system." There is no system here.
Secondly, I don't see how this list is any different from people who don't want to be listed on the XP rankings or Explorer rankings.
In fact, I believe they sell artifacts in other games to allow people to remove themselves from these lists.
I like Avaer's idea of adding the area in which the kill/death took place on the lists of names.
I also dissagree with the idea of making it a "rated" list.
The list speaks for itself, and would actually probabbly be a nice way for the player community to help police itself in the long run.
I'm not sure what all this talk of 'gaming the system" here is, since there is no system to be gamed.

There's nothing stopping you, but what is encouraging you to?
There was nothing stopping you from doing it last week either and gaining some xp and or beheaded trophies.

Why were all the people who made this point before Charune posted promptly ignored? This is the perfect solution that Charune asked for, and it'll take no time at all.

Rather than delete ratings, I say we delete griefers. Jozen volunteers. Should probably IP ban his whole subnet. It's the only way to be sure, short of nuking it from orbit.

Oh, this is a totally awesome feature that I can't wait to have a chance to try out! Nice work, admin! Keep up the great coding.
/sarcasm
I don't play Lusty for pk. Not everyone does. Celeris is a non-com. I left Achaea because of the rampant pk/griefing and they only have a mark system, which DOES not really do crap because most of the marks just suck. I like bashing/questing/influencing because I don't have to deal with pk to make my e-peen bigger, I like watching Cel's ranks rise as I press my aliases for hours on end with ONLY those three things (Hell, I don't even defend because I have other things I can do than PK to help Celest). To me, this whole system ONLY encourages griefing insofar as the kills rankings. Sure, I can see me hunting out in the asylum and next thing I know, there are two, three, maybe even four demis hunting me because Cel's ranked 142 and is of considerable might, oh and lets not forget, my little lowbie alt who is...well, probably going to be very safe during this whole thing because he's Magnagoran. (Yes, we know who is griefing lowbies/midbies and yes, Jozen, I am glaring in your general text direction.) So, unless the admin put in an opt-in/opt-out toggle, then I really don't think I want to actually do anything in Lusty but sit in a manse or something because the only other alternative it appears is to be FORCED to be involved in meaningless PK that is for some e-peen stroking ranks.
I really do believe the opt-in/opt-out is the best option. Even knowing that people are going to be able to see your PK kills is enough motivation for a lot of griefers. Keep the ranks, keep the lists, but don't stick all of us in the same PK MAKES ME HAPPY category, please?

And what about the explorers who don't like getting the messages and tells asking them to show people where secret areas are?
Or what about the level 90+ non-combatants who doesn't want to be attacked for the "great xp"
Where is their opt in/out option?

I was actually referring to an opt-in/opt-out for ALL of those who don't want to be involved in this. Who wants to be mowed like a yawn so the owner's neighbors can ooh and ahh about how awesome it looks?
Urazial2009-09-21 05:27:05
From the postings, I don't think there are people complaining/wanting an opt out feature for explorer or other rankings. If such is the case, I'm sure they can start a thread about it. However, until there are any complaints or serious concerns raised about the other rankings I just don't see why that keeps on being brought up.

Actually, I wouldn't mind having cloaked honours across my characters - much like the Divine have - and not appearing in any rankings (including kills and city/guild who) if that were an option.
I just don't like singling out PK specially and attempting to marginalize it, or make player-to-player combat outside of raiding even more taboo than it is now. There are ways to reduce the incentive for rampant PK without introducing faux PK flags, and I've always disliked the idea of them in terms of immersion (for much the same reason I dislike enemy territory experience penalties).

I would love to have that feature.
I just never had the chutzpah to think it was an option.
Estarra2009-09-21 06:21:55
I haven't been able to really read all the posts here but I will note that we were instructed to install this system by IRE as a precursor for future systems. You cannot opt out of it and we cannot really get rid of it. However, we can suppress the rankings kills/deaths if that has become an issue. I am rather perplexed if certain players are "obviously" gaming the system and killing lowbies why the entire Lusternia population doesn't turn against them--I know it's happened before to effect. Since I've had to ask the other IRE producers if they've had similar complaints and pointed them to this thread, I'm rather embarassed to say that our playerbase hasn't been able to handle this system with the grace that others have. Ah, well! I guess we all have different cultures.
Celina2009-09-21 06:27:22
You should be proud your players don't want Lusternia degrading into another Achaea aberration, and are concerned when it starts to smell like we're headed down that path.
Unknown2009-09-21 06:31:24
Weird, Aetolia doesn't have this system. Maybe they are just slower on implementing it.
