FYI, we have pretty much decided to implement most of what was on the original report. Within the next several weeks, we hope to complete this project so keep an eye out on the announce board!

It does, but that costs power, and as a druid I already use plenty of power. ):

Yeah, releasing a melded room should be free. But hey, the option is still there. {(|Force) + (flood|taint|forest|infest)} is still 1p, right?

Subj: Streamlining Combat Tweaks

Continuing with our goal to help streamline combat, we've instituted the
following changes:

o New Skill in Discernment: Audit (to audit decay times)

o Modified Skill in Discernment: PotionList Summary (to view contents of
potions)

o Lowered Rift in Planar.

2) My other major desire is the "universal affliction lines" change. Possibly barring something like Stupidity, I think that each affliction giving attack should give a secondary "Your skull has been brutally smashed in" type of message. It's one thing to require a system to participate in combat. It's a large part of what makes Lusternian combat fun. However, the fact the I have to try to collect 53 different lines that all make me type "writhe" is a chore.

I understand the illusions concern, but I think that adding this standardization is the single most important thing you could do to encourage new/returning combatants to undertake the endeavor that is Lusternian combat. Illusions should be simple enough to tweak to account for the change, but even if it's impossible I think that the good of the game itself outweighs the concerns of a single skillset (one which my character possesses).

I just want to echo this.

In theory, once you build up a charachter, combat should be something you can do just 1 hr a day, every few days. Right now it's not, because of these sorts of upkeep costs.

I also agree that universal affliction lines would be great!
Acrune2009-11-13 00:52:59
So, I was bored and decided to visit the forums and I found this thread.

I like what I see of that announce post quoted above, looks like good ideas without much potential for people to whine about them. Always the best kind of changes biggrin.gif

I also like the idea of the secondary affliction messages. I've always wanted to make a system, but I can't be bothered with tracking down and adding all 45478 lines for each affliction. Even my time is worth more then that, and back when I was playing, I would walk in 1.5 mile circles in my neighborhood for 1-2 hours a day for lack of anything better to do.

I've always hated demesnes, but I feel like if mages and druids continue to have and rely on them, they should be more useful then 10 rooms and adjacent room effects would allow, so I don't like the suggested ideas for demesnes. I think someone mentioned the idea of having the effects follow the person around, rather then requiring a demesne. That would make being a mage/druid a lot more tolerable I think. Code-wise it might be able to be done by attaching the effects to the person, rather then the room, so a room doesn't have to 'belong' to anyone. Every tick it checks adjacent rooms for people enemied/declared/standing in the correct terrain/whatever. Message-wise it can still look like its coming from the room.

Just my random thoughts that are probably irrelevant by now anyway (just need to kill some time before Survivor comes on biggrin.gif)

Oh quick idea...

Make quicksilver show when it is starting up... aka

You take a drink from a ruby vial.
Your body begins to vibrate as your heart quickens.

Tiny tremors spread through your body as the world seems to slow down.

Let's talk about further redundancies and the high entry cost:
  • Three forms of impalement: crucify, pinleg, gut impale. These can be stacked, of course, and each of them is also very hindering.
  • Slit throat and crushed windpipe. Do virtually the same thing and can be stacked, preventing eating, smoking, drinking, and speaking.
  • Stupidity and void. Void is just stupidity with a higher chance to trip you up. The cure is even the same.
  • Aeon, sap, and choke. Three forms of slowing a person down means three special cases I have to code in my combat system for dealing with all the things that are preventing me from curing them.
  • Paralysis and severed spine.
  • Dealing with incurable room-wide things that require you (or the person controlling the effect) to leave the room: aurawarp/homeostasis, octave/maestoso, recessional, etc. These are all special cases for curing.

Lusternia kept probably 90% of the afflictions from the Achaea base, and over the years has about tripled the count by adding in so many unique, flavor things. The flavor is great, but the complexity is astounding. There are probably a dozen afflictions that prevent a person from standing, at least a half dozen that keeps him from eating or drinking. Instead of just anorexia, asthma, paralysis, and slickness, we have to deal with things like a crushed windpipe, homeostasis, scarab beetles, a locked throat, a severed spine, etc, etc, etc.

Yeah i hear THAT, making my system cure all of those was a time consuming excercise in logic and the whole 'brackets within brackets' thing, which I no longer do cause I know better these days tongue.gif

The game could be way better streamlined in small steps, and this is one of them. Make curing lines simpler and more specific, when you apply regen to legs, have a message that tells you right away what leg it's healing (leave the delayed cure in, I like that). Weapon attacks especially should be 100% obvious and specific (Murphy swings his mighty hammer of awesome at you. The hammer hits your right leg and breaks it)

As for the current state of illusions? I think it should be left as it is. It was said previously in this thread that wah wah illusions are hard. They are SUPPOSED to be. Being able to code a system is something any idiot can do if they put their mind to it. Coding a system that doesn't get locked up, caters for illusions and does the simple things like resets cure list on diag, and makes sure you've sent the command to apply health to legs before it'll accept a healed message.

If you wanted to streamline afflictions, remove the potion balance (eg phlegmatic potions) and have it either smoke eat or apply, and allow old-school IRE affliction locks (slickness asthma anorexia). I like the complexity of lusternia's affliction system, however some things just need to be streamlined a bit.

I agree, why wasn't this in the streamlining part? You nerf demesnes but not choke? The most OP skill in the game currently? It's not so bad with Knights but it's hell with SD's. Especially with a system that thinks it knows how to cure in choke.

I don't see why I should have to code my system twice..

Make sure you delete aeon and sap, too.

(Also, it was previously stated that none of these are going away, so...)

neither Sap or Aeon can even be counted close to the effects of choke stop trying to deflect with :censor:.

Personally, I'd just delete Glomdoring, that pox upon the e-world.

your also attempting to deflect with censor.gif.
Merik2009-11-19 20:58:04
Damn OP skill abusing glommers.

I bet they only get OP skills because of the super lesbos.
Unknown2009-11-19 20:59:06
Well, because clearly no one is intent on actual conversation or speaking about how it is a balanced skill and not an I win button I will just message Estarra.
Llandros2009-11-19 20:59:26
Easy fix, just make it not follow. People can fight in it if they want or leave if they don't want to.
Unknown2009-11-19 21:05:36
To be honest, you guys are just throwing in nerfs to skills which annoy you under, as you say, the 'gise' of streamlining combat.

So if you wanted to point fingers at deflectors, well...
