Should we curb raiding?

It's been suggested (and if I remember, well-supported) to introduce a new form of arenas as an alternative.

A 2vs2 option would be nice, especially it performed in a tournament style. During the course of a RL month, teams of two challenge one another and are rewarded Qualifying Points. The teams with the most points at the end of the month play in a ladder style tournament over a period of a few days.

The Pros:
-curb raiding as the more wins = the more points
-alternative style of combat
-can allow for some interesting battles and combinations in a non-zerg format

The Cons:
-should we limit 1 person to 1 team?
-how to avoid gaming?
-it would need a worthwhile org reward to offer an alternative power gain
-how much will it curb raiding?

Raiding isn't why you lose players, it's people who are rampant in hyprocrisy and don't care what anyone else thinks

I first got jumped by Ethelon, in merians, I was no enemy of Mag, had done nothing to him previously. When I confronted him about it, he said "I was just trying to get Shuyin to fight". Well, Shuyin had rescued me and I ran back to the merian isle and Shuyin was still there, but Ethelon wasn't. So I called him out and he threw a fit and snubbed immediately, and now hunts me whenever he gets the chance.

Secondly, I fought Rylen on gorgogs for awhile, we ran into a stalemate where I couldn't really damage him out and he did nothing but try to drain my mana so I got bored and left, and nothing but insults about cowardice and how I was a failure came. when I instantly pointed out that I'm only 50% virt in blademaster, practically no other skills at all (been pumping everything into Blademaster), and he was 500% my might, it was really he who should have been upset he couldn't do anything against me, he instantly snubbed.

Narsrim, out of a giant group of Gloms on Faethorn attacking Lehki, forced me to follow him, took me to some random platform of darkness and tried to kill me there. Probably the least likely person to do anything to this group, and instead of just killing my puny self in this room, stole me away to some private keep? I am definitely not the most dangerous person out there

Marie, she jumped me in aslarans, tried to chasm, I fought her, locked her up once I think but couldn't do anything to kil her before her declare wore off ( which is lame, if she declares and I'm attacking her, it should stay until one of us is dead, or a time period where neither of us attacks each other), then she came back and managed to force me to throw my rapiers to her, which is lame, but whatever and since I had heard theft wasn't rampant in Lusty, I was a bit baffled asked for them back and was told if I "held still" she would give them, well I did and she tried to chasm, so I moved and called in friends to help because I couldn't fight her without my rapiers ( to her credit, she mailed my rapiers back to me, good on her)

But I see her in merians, I go and poke her, she runs, but comes back with Ruiku ( who I have seen post complaining about zergs and fighting and dueling etc). I mention to Ruiku, "well I guess I'll just call in friends" and he responds with this

Ruiku tells you, "Yes, be a pussy, cry more."

then snub immediately. No conversation, no nothing. I can go and point out Ruiku's post about zerging and what not complaining about being teamed up on, and he wants to team up on me and call me a pussy for pointing that out to him?

I was trying to get myself integrated into a family inside of Glomdoring, and I was told it was a mistake, because they "feared me being an alt, finding out information and using that back on my main character"
How lame is that? People go to such lengths to screw other orgs and people that they make alts to find secret information? That's the kind of thing that drives people away.

These, I'm sure, are just a few examples, and I'm sure Glomdoring has plenty of people who do the same lame stuff that I haven't seen. I've been playing this game 2 weeks. -2 weeks- and this had already happened to me. Granted, I'm sure I provoked some of it with my nicely worded poems, but you have players who sit there and preach one thing and then practice another and focus on those who are soooo much weaker than them. This isn't my first rodeo, I've played IRE's before, so I know not to flip out when I get attacked, and only Ixion's managed to kill me with some ridiculous stun that let him attack again before I could move in Gorgogs. (I died in two hits, because gorgogs hurt a bit).

Earlier, someone posted about Ethelon dragging two newbies up to astral and ditching them there. These are the things that drive new players away. These are things that should be looked at. Supposedly Avenger is suppose to help with this griefing, but what, I'm suppose to sit there and take a death from multitudes of these griefers, because I happened to pick Glomdoring to become a member of? What about people who don't know what's going on? They are targetted for being a member of Glomdoring, I don't really know of an area to hunt and bash in that isn't enemy territory at lvl 70 and above, which defeats the point of Avenger. These are the things that drive people away.

There's the whole Maesin incident, but still. It's my understanding that the family in question is still interested, I think.
Brock2009-11-07 18:40:46
It's more that they just assume the worst in an alt, which is insulting and degrading

oh, I don't want you because you may secretly be a traitor, but you seem cool, so I hope you aren't!

which is just something that I can't win against, and prevents my integration into an org, which in turn makes things less fun. I think everyone can agree that becoming involved and integrated makes thing more enjoyable all around, but from what this says, it doesn't matter what I do, I could just be an evil alt plotting destruction, which prevents that integration, which in turn prevents things becoming more fun, which leads to people leaving.

Welcome to online gaming, first of all. Hypocrisy is everywhere in any game with PvP, which is unfortunate. You just have to respect the players that aren't hypocrites and aim to play with them. The whole family incident, though, is unfortunate. It's a breach of IC to prevent potential OOC abuse.

Honestly, you can "win" against it. Just do what you've been doing, really.

See, the problem with this is... play with them how? This isn't like Halo or some such where you can just chose to play against certain people. You can't really pick the people you play against, because few players have the clot or patience to shift alliances, and some people will determine to stick to you no matter how obvious it is you don't want to play with them. The best you can do is choose to side with those you don't feel are hypocrites (siding with =! playing with), and that just digs deeper into my whole previously mentioned issue with "e-adversaries".

It's also not fair to say it was always like this. Anyone else remember some of the things Shamarah posted about regarding game atmosphere and player relations while he was dropping out of activity?
Shiri2009-11-07 19:06:41
It was always like this. Or at least, it was like this on day 1. Maybe it faded for some small time inbetween.

To be fair you did go ahead and post on the public board, didn't you? That's just going to make you a more attractive target and makes you seem like a bit of an ass.

Personally the raiding that annoys me the most is when it's on the tidelords/earthlords/whatever the forests have, because I think I'm right in saying that if that's done when the manifestations are active then it can stop the city or commune from gaining the bonus from empowerment, they're not difficult to kill, I've seen two people kill the entire lot, but it can have major larger effects on the city or commune than killing the supernals/demonlords/ect

Lol. I'm sorry about the rapier thing. Really I am. I felt bad afterward when I thought you didn't get them back. I probably won't do something like unto that again anyway. Wasn't wroth the drama. Anyway. When you attacked me at merians I didn't run. I just didn't notice you attacked me until I had walked away a bit. Was focused on other things. Ruiku was already coming to helpme kill off gorgogs so we could close the rift. But that was the basics of it. You all can say what you wana say about it, I don't really care. I know what I was doing and my intentions. smile.gif
Veyrzhul2009-11-07 19:10:19
There's quite a number of people who are fairly quick with insults. In most cases it's simply because they didn't get what they wanted or expected. Alot of things will be said that you shouldn't take too seriously. That kind of venting right after the incident is best ignored, in my opinion. They'll calm down and be nice fellows again... for a while.

I didn't say that it was. In every game in which people play against people, you'll have hypocrisy, people rubbing your nose into the ground and when you return the favour, you're not allowed to. It's a role-playing game (or supposed to be) so you will inevitably be forced to RP with hypocrites, but that's not to say that you have to continue to on an OOC level.
Unknown2009-11-07 19:18:05
Yes, Brock, IG insults are just that, IG. I'm fairly sure you're a pleasant person outside of Lusternia, but anyway, make sure you post the entirety and don't edit out certain things you don't want people to see, but the best thing I've learned to deal with IG harassment is to snub or ignore it, much like Brock didn't do to Ethelon.

Edit: Sorry about calling you a pussy, was venting IG for OOC frustration. sleep.gif

Rough ride mate. The Ruiku and Ethelon bit makes me smile though, I don't understand snubbing over stuff like that, heh.

Stick with Glom, the Maesin thing has made people really wary and it sucks that you should have to defend yourself against it - we need someone cool to take away the bitter taste that left.
Unknown2009-11-07 19:41:36
Well, the point of snubbing was that I had previous conversations with Brock, all which did not go so well, I should have let you had the last word, so censor.gif like this doesn't end up on forums and cause numerous flames and more drama(i.e., right now).

Only reason why I ever snub anyone is to keep myself from saying something rude/offensive/something I'll regret to them out of venting or anger. I prefer to keep friendly feelings between everyone in Lusternia so I don't have any personal enemies.

Kinda similar to the 'Meh' I felt after the whole Tyrni/Nicholo thing that led me to taking Syridean back up. And now I'm too involved with Syridean and the Aquas to go to anyone else for any length of time...

As far as curbing raids goes, we did attempt to trap Shuyin & co. during a recent celestia raid. He couldn't use his cubix, but he was able to d.fire and hop through the Pool. Which is amusing in its own right. I'd like to note that he didn't go after any of the Supernals or angels this time, so he may have just been seeing if he could.
