So, Pandora is rather nifty for suggesting music. HOWEVER, I quite believe real people are even better. Let's do our own version of Pandora - post a few bands you like, and let us, the informed and talented forum populace, expand your musical horizons.

Evaine has unwittingly played host to the first round. Her picks:

- Lamb of God
- Tool
- Faith No More

My suggestions:

- Rammstein: bass-heavy, yet clean. Dark, atmospheric, driving beats
- VNV Nation: takes the Tool-style bass beats and translates them to synth in a very dark and heavy way
- Virgin Steel (esp House of Atreus album): Overarching harmonies reach a peak in this album, with a dark, twisted, metal approach to the classic Greek mythological saga. Might be a bit lighter in sound than her favs, but in concept and lyrics, an interesting match to try out.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Air - Moon Safari

Yes - I am very zen.

@ Chade, try out Blonde Redhead. Mellow, trip-hop vibe like Air's, but with breathy vocals slightly reminscent of Bjork's more quiet stuff.

Also, consider Ween (Chocolate and Cheese album is great). A ton of variation - it's like listening to a CD of about 10 different bands - but there is some sexy guitar work that reminds me of Beck's cover of "A day in the life" - relaxed, sustained electric solo work.

Finally, try out "Sea Wolf" (Leaves in the River). Simple, yet beautiful work. The more you listen, the more little things you'll find in each song.

You might like Ween as well.

Check out the Decemberists if you haven't already. Picaresque is a great album, but...I like all their albums, heh.

Dandy Warhols, for their upbeat, somewhat quirky rock.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but give The Faint a try. They have this great mix of rock with the occasional electronic effects, giving them a loud, driving yet danceable sound.

Spoon. More upbeat rock. They are pretty mainstream, so you might have heard of them!

Oh, another one for Chade - Morcheeba, though I think they (she?) is pretty big over in the UK.

Someone give me some suggestions. I need some more dancey stuff to play during car trips. Gimme something along the lines of:

Hot Chip
Justice
Crystal Castles

The Killers
Franz Ferdinand
Cobra Starship
Unknown2009-12-02 15:45:43
Ooh, I just saw Franz Ferdinand a few months back in Hollywood. They put on a great show!

Definitely check out Kasabian. I saw them when they were touring with Oasis, and they have that same high-energy, makes-you-wanna-move sounds as Franz Ferdinand and the Killers.

Lesse, you might also like the Faint, for the aforementioned mix of rock with electronic sounds.

Artic Monkeys. They have similar singing styles and vocal melodies to your choices.

The Fratellis. You've probably heard their single Chelsey Dagger on TV. Similar key chord progressions to the Killers.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only dork who actually listens to Blue Man Group outside of their shows. They are my workout music. tongue.gif

Actually have you ever checked out Bond? They are like...the Russian/Spice Girl version of Apocalyptica. No, I'm serious.

I have Blue Man Group going all the time at work. It's great stuff.

I'd probably also enjoy American sporting events if they had stuff like this for halftime shows.

EDIT: Oh, and her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxB7Wdjmv1c She was in one of Flo-Rida's singles too. And she kinda seems to like to party, you can hear it from that song. Partyyy

Some House, some german reggae, some hot nordic chick. All good for dancing, though. New Slang being slow, while something good is fast, and the rest is inbetween.

I am bored and think more people need to suggest music for me to find. Thus, my offerings!

The New Pornographers- Indie. Makes me feel very mellow. I like Adventures in Solitude.
Coheed and Cambria- Progressive rock. I won't say a song because they play two different kinds of styles and I like them both.
The Prize Fighter Inferno- Crazy. Sort of crazy electronica with a falsetto singer (The guy from Coheed and Cambria.)
The Clockwork Dolls- Steampunk themed.
Edwardia- Classical, sort of!
From Autumn to Ashes- Hmm, I usually listen to their softer, more 'indie' stuff.
Ikon- Electronica/darkwave
Tankt- Same as above.

A bunch of stuff that I think shares ties to bands already brought up, in no particular order (though I don't listen to R&B or rap very much, so I have no idea there)

Emilie Autumns - plays 'classical' chamber music with a modern twist, a number of things based on fairy tales and stories, like Rapunzel or Romeo and Juliet. Also an excellent (sometimes electric) violinist (she did all the orchestra work for some Dethklok episodes, if you're into that). Shalott, based on the Arthurian poem, totally captured me.

Xandria - sorta in the same broad genre as Nightwish and Within Temptation, though the singer is not quite so operatic. Lots of African and east Indian themed stuff, though a number of traditional ballads too. Dunno what to suggest here, kinda a broad pick.

Silentium - a darker version of the same previous genre, they have a male singer that occasionally complements the female one, and an awesome brooding cello line. I suggest Frostnight to start!

Death Cab For Cutie - west coast indie, very mellow, hopeful. I heard and liked Where Soul Meets Body for ages on the radio and never knew it was them.

Covenant - My absolute favourite EBM band, they layer their music really well, the singer has a very hypnotic, sonorous voice. I suggest Call The Ships To Port.

Eisbrecher - Industrial dance (like if Rammstein decided they were going to make club music). Vergissmeinnicht probably highlights the blend best.

Random personal faves

Alestorm - pirate metal biggrin.gif!

The Birthday Massacre - sinister electronica with a cute-sy female vocalist, lots of dream-like songs
