On second thought, a partial refund of essence would suffice for Vernals who have their status revoked, because let's face it, it's a world and a half easier to bash essence as a Vernal with a high crit rate than someone at level 80 with as much buffs as they can muster.

I like Xenthos' Paragon idea too.

QUOTE (Xenthos @ Mar 22 2010, 10:38 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
1) Rename Vernal Ascendants to "Paragons".
2) Remove Domoth advantages from Paragons. Leave the other effects as-is.
3) Add in Vernal Ascendants, cap at one per organization. This must be raised from a Paragon, at much higher power costs.
4) Give Vernal Ascendants the current Domoth bonuses. Further give them additional strong powers / abilities which come with being "one-of-a-kind".

I like this idea. You would have to address how nations could handle a dormant/misbehaving/etc. VA in a way that's balanced, but I don't think that'll be a problem, just an item to cover on the way.
I think you've really hit the nail on the head here to separate the better-at-domoths feature out from the other VA features. In fact, it might make sense to go a step farther and separate it into three steps. Since there are three key things that VA means that are all jumbled together: Better-At-Domoths, Boost-To-Demigod, and Recognition-For-Service. You've peeled one of them away, maybe we could address some of the other concerns by peeling the other away.
1) Boost anyone to demigod for 500K. (Estarra's already planning to give us the roundabout form of this.) (Even better: make the cost prorated by level.)
2) Paragon only costs 500K, but can only be done on Demigods. (Thus, net cost for a Paragon is the same as before, but in a way it's also prorated in such a way that demigods are no longer mostly-excluded. Paragon is as you describe above, just like current VA without domoths, and is advertised as being about Recognition For (past and future) Service To Your City/Commune.
3) One Paragon can be made the Vernal Ascendant at any time. There's a cost to promote one, and a similar cost to transfer the mantle from one Paragon to another, and There Can Be Only One™.
But this is just an incremental extension. I think your idea hits the most important point.

Just as a historical note, vernal gods and vernal ascendants are the same, insofar as they were raised the same way, etc. The only difference is that the Threshold Abyss prevents vernals from now touching the Immanidivinus (thanks to Ayridion!).
I'm going to close this thread and start a new one for productive and constructive discussion. There's so much animus and circular rhetoric going on here that it's hard for me to separate the wheat from the chaff. Yes, this should have been implemented earlier and I'm sorry it wasn't. No, we're not going to just rename ascendants to paragons. No, I'm not out to get Glomdoring (strangely enough I get accused often enough of "giving in" to Glomdoring). If you want to believe I never listen to players, I don't have much to respond to that except to say that I disagree with you and that scolding me is hardly likely to shame me into listening to your ideas (though I'm sure it makes you feel better to let off steam!). Ultimately, the game design of Lusternia isn't a democratic process and I do have the last word, which makes me the supreme architect, glorious tyrant, benevolent dictator, and, erm, Creatrix. Are people really shocked by that?
I have decided that we'll hold off on implementing the upkeep cost for ascendants and fold it into an overview of the ascension/demigod system. However, in all likelihood it will be implemented so please keep that in mind when joining the discussion.
