Video editing

So recently I've been playing around with my digital camera. It takes video. However, the only video playback program I have when I transfer the vids from my camera to my computer is QuickTime, which doesn't let me edit videos.

I was wondering if anyone knew what programs I could use for video editing? I don't need anything particularly fancy, just something that might let me cut content off (for instance, if I have a video that runs for 21 minutes and I want to cut it down to 20, it would let me chop off the last minute of content). Possibly something that would let me take specific parts of videos, take them, and then put it together in a new video (like a movie trailer-ish kind of a deal).

Halp prz.

If you're on a Mac, iMovie is pretty good for that sort of thing.

Unfortunately not. I got QuickTime from Itunes, and for some reason my camera automatically has that as its default movie program.

I used Windows Movie Maker which I think was packaged with Vista--so I assume it's free.

BTW, if you need to convert videos between different formats, I found this free site pretty handy: http://www.zamzar.com/

...who knew just hitting the Start button would answer my question for me! lol, thanks a bunch. I have a new toy to play with yay.

Personally, I always liked VirtualDub. I found Windows Movie Maker to be cumbersome myself, but everyone's taste is different, I suppose.

Hm. Apparently my camera only makes .MOV files, which none of those programs support. And every free file converter site I found only supports either 100MB or 200MB conversions, most of the files I have are in the 400-500 range.

The one I recommended (http://www.zamzar.com/) claims they'll convert up to 1 GB.

That's when you pay a monthly fee of $49. The freeware version is "only" 100MB.

I also found this, which they claim will convert .mov-files. I don't have any .mov-files though, and I didn't have much luck myself, but I haven't really had much time to play with it either.

I will find out if this works in the projected conversion done time of 32 minutes! Thanks for all your help.

Ok so I'm using a different version of QuickTime that lets me edit videos. I did some cutting/pasting of some vids I found and toyed with it a little, turned it into a little music video. It is 3 minutes and 40 seconds long. Wondering how it would be on youtube, I decided to try uploading it. For some reason, it only uses the first minute and 34 seconds of the video.

Looking at the options, there's this part under properties that lists 'parts' of the video. There's Video Track 1, Video Track 2, etc., up through 8. Video Track 1 is 1:34 long, which would probably be the explanation. Problem is, I have no idea how to change this. Anyone ever use this and know wtf to do?

Edit: nvm figured it out
