Well, glide and forcefield certainly help, but Piloting is the position with the least lesson investment, unlike Empath which "needs" Clarity, and Gunner, where at least one "needs" Shockwave, and where more lessons give you higher crit.

I pretty much went from 70 to 78 almost solely on aetherhunting trips.
If you can get on a ship with the Eldanien it's amazing.
