They really, really don't.

It still makes no sense for a city that slaves and robs people of their free will to be allied to a city that celebrates freedom. Ideals don't mean a damn thing, it seems... or, was it just a case of 'Let's be friends because (1) my leaders were members of your org, or (2) we're cool OOC'. It shouldn't bother me, but it totally does.

Also, Mags needs more mad engineers. And gears. I like gears.

EDIT: Oh, crap. I went past the 140 character limit.

Wait, uh, what?

I think he's referring to Gaudi/Mag. Which I don't really think is such a big deal.

Gaudiguch isn't about freedom for everyone and making sure everyone is free - it is freedom for Gaudiguch. If they decide they want to burn down that forest over there, they damn well have the freedom to, whether you like it or not! If you too wish to enjoy such freedom, you should join Gauiguch (hello, village influencing). Etc, etc, etc.

When you look at it from that perspective, it makes more sense for them to ally with whoever they feel like at a given time. You think Mag is a bad fit? Okay, let's try Celest with their Lig... oh, not really. Maybe Glomdoring? Hmm, not quite. Uh...

Yeah, doesn't really work that way.

That is correct. Although, I've often struggled as to whether or not this is actually a more realistic representation of politics than orgs actually aligning on the basis of their ideals.
Unknown2010-09-11 19:05:14
Look at the world, eh? How often do countries align based on similar ideals? Not very often! While it might be what you think is logical, if you take a step back, it is a pretty insignificant reason to create an alliance. Alliances are tools of politics and security, not of philosophy; we don't have the luxury to pick and choose allies based on if we agree with them or not. We have to pick them based on what makes us less likely to be dead at any given moment! tongue.gif

Freedom in Gaudiguch is subjective, sure, we're all free in Gaudiguch, but freedom is a gift and those who abuse it (or we feel would abuse it) aren't worthy of a such a gift. Now, we would not stoop as low as slavery, you can easily be delegated as second rate, or not worth the gift. wink.gif

See? Opinions are fun!
Unknown2010-09-11 22:15:07
Any freedom can be inverted. You are free to chose, but I'm giving you freedom from choice! You have the right to live, but I'm just freeing you from all that homeostasis nonsense.

Duality is a funny, and often irritating, thing.
Lendren2010-09-12 01:09:34
There are far, far better examples of "nothing means anything anymore" than this one. Magnagora is hardly anti-freedom; it's just that freedom comes from moving up in the chain of "screw the people below you/get screwed by the people above you" people. There are plenty of very compelling arguments for why Lusternia politics blatantly repudiates ideology, but this isn't really one.

Most positions that suffer from this do have personal assistant positions attached.

You bid a graceful ebony and gold lyre of the bloody orchid a grateful farewell as you play a diminishing scale at an ever-slowing pace, causing the instrument to gradually lose a faint glow that only becomes perceptible because of its progressive disappearance, until the light finally goes out, leaving the final note to ring with a hollow echo.

I can never figure Xion out. I go up there and have no clue how to start. Somebody probably always has it done already, stupid aether contrivances.

I know how it starts, but I have no idea how it ends. I can do about half of it (guessing, since I don't know what I'm missing yet). It's just good hunting for me.
