Figured some of you might own a DS, so I'm wondering... Would you say they're error-prone? Bought one two days ago, which started showing errors the day afterwards ("An error occured - Please press the power button" or some such). Got a new one, and that one survived for a massive 24 hours. I can't do anything at all with this one; when I try to go into the settings, it stops working. When I try to start a game, it stops working. Nothing works. Anyone else have similar experiences, or am I the statistical anomaly?
ongaku2010-04-24 08:04:52
That's bizarre. I've owned 2 DS Lites and one DSi, and I haven't experienced anything like that.
I have had some little things go wrong. I replaced my first DS Lite because the R button stopped working. I've also had issues with Harvest Moon for DS, but from what I've heard from a friend, Harvest Moon is the one that's prone to erroring out, not the DS itself.
What sort of DS is it? The big clunky standard one, a DS Lite, DSi or DSi XL (the giant screened one)?

Ah, right, should've noted that. It's a DSi XL.

Ooh, okay. I've not fiddled with one of those, so I'm not very familiar with how often it has errors. That's really not like Nintendo though, their products tend to be remarkably bug-free. I got my DSi not long after it came out and haven't had any issues with it.
I'll do a bit of research though and see what I can find.
EDIT: Found something at least. >.>

"An Error Occurred. Press and hold POWER to turn the system off."
When do you see this error?
1. If you see this error while playing a Nintendo DS game card game:
There are no known issues that create this error with any Nintendo DS game card games. Our experience shows that if you see this error, your game is likely a counterfeit product. Please click here for information on identifying and reporting counterfeit products.
To test your Nintendo DS game card, try this testing tip:
o Try playing the game in a Nintendo DS Lite or a Nintendo DS (original style).
+ If the game still does not work, it's more likely the game card is defective and will need to be replaced. Please click here for replacement options.
+ If the game works in either a Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite, our experience shows that the game is likely a counterfeit product.
2. If you see this error when there is no Nintendo DS game card inserted into your system:
o If you have not already done so, power the system off and then back on to see if this resolves the issue. If the issue persists after the system has been powered down, please call our Consumer Department at 1-800-255-3700 to speak to one of our representatives.

It's not much help, but it's a start.

Yeah... Tried it with three games, all games had the same problem. Two of them were used when I bought them, the third was wrapped in plastic. So it shouldn't have to do with counterfeit or bugged games. Especially as it happens even with no game cartridge in it now...

I'd say give Tech/Customer Support a ring then. That's really odd that it's happened with two of your systems. Worst errors I ever had with Nintendo systems were with my SNES, and then I could always just blow the cartridge and system out to fix it. XD

I've owned a DSLite for a few years now, haven't run into any problems - it's remarkably sturdy aside from the distressing-looking-but-mostly-harmless cracks in the hinges. Not sure about the DSi and its kin though. Try to switch it in for another, it might just be bad luck.
Ssaliss2010-04-24 08:43:22
Bad luck with two consoles? But yeah. About to go to the store to see what, if anything, they can do. Not sure I even want a third one though, at least not right now. It's only two months old (or even less), so it might still have some bugs in it.

Harvest Moon in general is buggy as all hell, Harvest Moon DS is especially so
Ssaliss2010-04-24 09:13:45
Brought it back to the shop I got it from (conveniently just a 10 minute walk from home), and of course, by then it started working again. But not in the three hours I tested it. Ah well...

I have a Guitar Hero World Tour guitar that I got specifically for playing GH3 (because GH3 refuses to use the Rock Band guitar ><) and the red fret didn't want to work until the day I was about to take it back to Game Stop. >.O So I know the feeling.

This. Sunshine Islands (and Twin Villages, apparently, though that's still not translated yet) isn't bad, though, and the Rune Factory line is pretty good.

I had almost forgotten about Harvest Moon. Love that series
EDIT: Damnit, now I got the urge to go buy it somewhere But I'm still not confident my DS will survive...

My DSi's R-button broke within a few days...but otherwise it's been perfectly functional. Maybe you just have bad luck with all the defective ones hopefully you got some sort of warranty thing!

Oddly great series for it's mostly just farming, but alas, it is indeed one of my favourite series of all time.
Never had many issues with my DSlite, occasionally it likes to pretend there isn't a game in one of the slots (usually the one I want!) but after a few pulling the cartridge out and putting it back in it tends to work.

I have the original DS, in classic silver.

Yes, my blue DS Fat has lasted me many years, and I have never had a single problem with it. DS Fat!

The same thing applies to my original PSP. I've dropped it, smashed the screen, WASHED it, crushed it, and abused it in all ways reasonable and otherwise. It still works like a dream.

I turn OCD over tiny screens. One dead pixel, one tiny scratch, a small finger smudge, or even a couple specks of dust will drive me insane.
I'm very careful with my PSP, and clean the screen with a microfiber cloth before and after using it (although I haven't really used it in a couple of years now).
My DS Lite is more forgiving. It folds shut, so I can toss it in a purse or backpack without much worry, and both screens seem much more resistant to dirt and damage.

I've always worried about scratching up my touch screen (because the DSes at the stores are HORRIBLE, they're completely scratched up), but I've found that the DSes are really rather scratch resistant. And I get crazy with my stylus if I'm really into the game. XD
