Can we please get an option that makes us unable to receive tells unless they type out our full name? I'm really, really sick of getting missays. I've asked several times to have my name changed, but that's not allowed. Getting them over and over and over from the same people in the span of a few minutes is really getting on my nerves.

It's the Skyplumes, isn't it? I'm so sorry. No matter how many times I tell them to type out Sylandra's full name....

I get so many from people who try to reply to tells and mess up for whatever reason.

I just cannot even BEGIN to count how many times I've heard them go "OOPS I sent a mistell to Sylphas again"

That prevents you from sending them not other people from sending them to you.

Yes, I'm just saying that everyone should config it off instead of being lazy and we'd have no worries about silly mistells.

Means no worry about her accidentally sending them. It's nice for preventing accidents.
Sylphas2010-05-06 07:41:10
Yeah, first thing I did when that option appeared was toggle it off.
Skyplumes don't bother me overly much. It happens a lot, but meh. I was just in a terrible mood tonight and got like 5 mistells from one guy in the space of maybe 10 minutes. I almost ragesnubbed him.

Mis-tells could be nearly eliminated through the simple expedient of requiring just one additional letter in the abbreviation. Two letters is an inappropriate threshold that practically begs for certain people to receive rampant mis-tells. As fastidious as I normally am when typing, I nevertheless typed PE one time instead of PR, and sent "Satchel." to Pectus Dawneye. She was not pleased, and I immediately changed my configuration to exact names only.
It hurts people whose characters have unfortunate names (something that's almost impossible to predict), and it also hurts people (like me) who might wish to use abbreviations, but opt not to so that they don't accidentally spam innocent players whose names are close to other game commands.
Hell no, we won't go! Make love, not war! Give peace a chance! Meat is murder! Er... well, anyway, this problem could really use some attention, in my opinion.

Most of my mistells come from three-letter ones, and my Aetolia character got thousands of them from a three-letter one as well. Telperion will also fall into this camp.

I still stick by my assertion that increasing the minimum to three letters would vastly reduce the number of mis-tells received. Plenty of people in this thread and elsewhere get them from two-letter mistakes.
Surely four would do the trick almost entirely, though, if not three.

See, the trouble for Sylphas, Syridean, Sylvia, Sylandra, and Telperion is that it's not even a three letter abbreviation that's being missed. It's SAY BLAH getting truncated to SY BLAH (Funny story about that. Had a novice talking to Fania about how she's no longer Magister. I only found it out when she accidentally did "SY And then he took your job.") Or TELL PERSON BLAH getting truncated to TEL PERSON BLAH.
It's actually gotten to the point where not only do I suggest CONFIG NAMETELLS OFF, but I also let them know you can hit ' and it functions like SAY. (Likewise, I believe : aliases to EMOTE, but I'm not 100% on that one.)

I never really understood why people use the SAY command when it is a lot simpler to use the ' instead. :S That's what I do anyway.

She means that in order to send a nametell to sylphas, you'd have to use syl at the least, and sy wouldn't work.

There's that issue, too, but short of a namechange that's not going to be fixable. Now we apparently have a Sylphie, too, poor thing.

I do it because SAY works everywhere I go, but the other tricks are different in different games and systems. So it gets really habitual and easy.

More people should just turn nametells off.
