I don't see why you all can't seem to come up with good-looking hat designs for women. There's plenty! Like that one I linked earlier in the thread! It's very feminine and classy, and doesn't look bad at all. I wouldn't mind a girl wearing that on a date with me. happy.gif

You all are being too rigid to say that you can't think of any hats that wouldn't be good for women.

Also lol Vendetta, he DOES look like Odd Job. XD Although everytime I look at him, I think of the song "Another One Bites the Dust."

I certainly can't picture Felicia in a hat... she's basically a fairy who roughs it in the forest.

Any sort of thing can be a hat though. A hat could be made of woven fern fronds or a ravenwood nut shell or even a big folded leaf or strips of bark woven into any old shape. All it has to have is the word 'hat' in it. It can be big or small, clean or dirty, fancy or boring. I think people have this picture in their heads about what a hat has to be and need to be more creative.

In fact, if you want to be persnickety about it, if your character is roughing it in the woods, how likely is it that she'd be wearing a fancy dress anyway? If she can wear a fancy dress while camping, why is the idea of some sort of hat so strange?

Tut tut, back up, you skunk you!

I never said that all hats are going to be awful and no female characters would ever want to wear them. I am sure there will be some excellent hat designs out there that are desirable and beautiful, and I'm sure female characters will want to wear them. I just... don't like being restricted to hats. Hats just don't feel right for my character, and maybe I'm very much in the minority, although Aramel seems to feel similarly.

Felicia never wears backpacks, either. For one thing, where do you put a backpack if you have huge butterfly wings? For another, backpacks remind me of school, college and library just by the very word, much like hats remind me of church and weddings. As a result, Felicia only uses satchels and pouches, even though backpacks have much better decay values and (I think) hold more stuff.

I know it's possible to be creative with it. I love being creative!

But as illustrated above, just the noun "hat" is a problem for me. It evokes images in my head of modern times, and even disregarding that, it just wouldn't feel right on my character. I have an incredibly specific taste for what she wears, and any kind of cap or hat just isn't it.

Admittedly, there's no point in changing a bunch of mechanics just because I personally don't like hats. And, perhaps I can come up with a design I'll find fitting. Who knows?
Aramel2010-05-19 13:49:23
Yes, the "hat" noun there is the problem, since any hat I envision that fits me looks more like a headdress, heh. I'll go try and ask the Charites IG to give us a greatrobe veil design. They've done it before, they might humour us now - and if not, ah well.
Eventru2010-05-19 13:52:21
Crowns/circlets/etc are jeweler items, and they can be worn and enchanted. You cannot wear a hat and a crown/circlet, I'm fairly certain.

Veils do not cover the head, in terms of how the code views them - they cover the face. So no, I don't foresee greatrobe veils (though Estarra knows that stuff far better than I, and has that final call). You can wear both a hat and a veil (which is a separate tailoring design, under accessories), so feel free to design and wear both.

And adding new patterns is, from my understanding, a tedious if not difficult affair - some people have asked for years for this is my understanding.

I can wear a crown on top of my helm. I don't see why it should be so different for hats.
Eventru2010-05-19 13:58:01
I'm simply stating it as I remember it - you weren't able to wear or rub a crown while your hood was raised. My memory may be failing or it could have been changed, though!

You carefully study a tailoring pattern.
Item: Veil Type: Accessories Org: Public
Commodities: silk 4 silver 4
Mortal Reviews: Allowed
Layer: ACCESSORY Bodyparts: head, face
IMPORTANT: The main noun MUST use one of these: VEIL
Appearance:
an ethereal rose veil

Just saying. And yes, I would wear both if I had some means of making the hat invisible to the casual viewer - which is sort of the main issue here. But all right, I'll drop the subject.

You know I wub.gif you. happy.gif

If "hat" doesn't do it for you, let's see, there's chapeau, bonnet, cowl, beret, capuchon, fez, fedora (a particularly nice looking hat, one I might use for Ongaku >.> I think women look quite good in them, too). The list goes on. happy.gif

The veil can still be worn with a greatrobes hat, unlike such a hat being worn with a raised hood, as a quick, thirty seconds of testing would reveal.

I think part of the problem Felicia's having is that in the design system, a hat has to use the word "hat". It can't use chapeau, bonnet, cowl, beret, capuchon, fez, or fedora. Unless it's a "bonnet hat"...
ongaku2010-05-19 14:08:36
Aah, I see.

#ga {hat} ?

happy.gif

Guess that'd gag the whole line though. >.>
Shiri2010-05-19 14:12:36
And everyone else would still look at her and envision an elf in an elaborate gown, top hat, monocle and moustache.

EDIT: Not gonna help Aramel's situation, but...
EDIT: This isn't bad for a hat though.
EDIT: DEFINITELY GETTING THIS INGAME

People are having trouble with women's hats?

Well, if that's the problem, maybe nouns could (should) be added to the existing "greatrobes hat" pattern. Some of the patterns have multiple allowable nouns, after all. I'm not sure how difficult that is, code-wise, but we do have a whole hat category.

I am so glad we have you, Felicia, who else would tell us all the unwritten laws of the 'High Fantasy' universe?!

What is 'High' fantasy anyway? Is that the kind of fantasy they do in Amsterdam?

Yep, that's the problem. Before I read your post just now, I was down in the kitchen making coffee and thinking exactly the same thing. You're not only restricted to hats, you're additionally restricted to hats that include the noun "hat." That's not evil and terrible, but it's a deal-breaker if you don't like the noun very much.

Come to think of it, most medieval hats were not directly named as "hats" at all. They had particular names, much like the modern fedora: Wimple, coif, hennin, burlet, chaperon, crespinette, caul, barbette, tricorne, snood, and so on and so forth.

I guess it sounds like I'm railing against the terrible injustice of it all, but I'm not. I'm just elaborating on my position. Overall, I'm still pleased, although if I can't get the look I want... I will probably still just use greatrobes, and switch to a "regular" gown for RP and social occasions, or whatever.

Didn't see this until I posted the above... I was definitely joking about the law thing, and I hope everyone realizes it! dazed.gif
