People actually take that as a statement of what Gaudiguch should be? She's been espousing that everywhere, always.

And I definitely get what Kaalak is saying. The Charge of the Goddess in Wicca states "All acts of love and pleasure are my rituals." Voodoo and many other traditions routinely have liqoured up, cigar smoking spirits that take offerings of alcohol. Plenty of cultures have rituals where you dance until you reach a trance state. It's as valid as a method for reaching beyond ones one mind as asceticism can be, if you look around the world, but taking that to mean things are just for fun and anarchy is really a slap in the face to all of the inspirations for Gaudiguch as well as an assertion that one-sided, skin-deep RP is acceptable.

This is my biggest pet peeve in Gaudiguch. Gaudiguch is supposed to seem frivolous and hedonistic from the outside looking in. On the inside it is supposed to be a place where you do drugs, get drunk, roll around naked in cream pies as a form to reach a higher self conscious (enlightenment). People take the get drunk and get high and roll around naked to mean, if you are not a drunken buffoon you are doing it wrong. The historical excerpts of Gaudiguch show a very very thin slice of Gaudiguch life and taking them to mean the definition of Gaudiguch is what is bringing Gaudiguch down.

Those who open their eyes to the city and the lessons taught and listen to the mobs words/stories find there is a much deeper sub culture than presented in a few paragraphs of Schucidira lighting the Hallifax ambassador on fire. Heck you can't even get through the collegium without first being inducted into your first secret cult/cabal/order. So right from the novice life on, you should be aware that there is more then just cheap whiskey and getting stoned and chanting platitudes about how illuminated you are because you know how to party and be crazy.

I sincerely believe that the official blurb for Gaudiguch, seen here, contributes to the city's troubles. While I don't think waving around DayGlo signs proclaiming "SECRET SOCIETIES THIS WAY ->" is a feasible solution (after all, they're supposed to be secret), new or returning players are assaulted by piles of information about many subjects — client commands, abilities, lessons, chat management, non-city areas, etc. They may also simply be dense. As such, placing some vague hints in public descriptions of Gaudiguch might not be remiss.

Now, what I truly don't understand (and where I tend to sympathize with Gregori and other city elders) is why some of these new and returning players argue and complain about Gaudiguch's situation. If you want complete freedom (i.e., anarchy), you can (you truly can!) be a rogue, convince the various cities and communes that you aren't a threat, and come and go anywhere you're trusted. There's absolutely nothing stopping you from doing that.

Personally, I consider the Great Pyramid to be a huge giveaway of the city's hidden secrets. Being a student of Discordianism and fnords myself, I strongly suspect it's an allusion to the All-Seeing Eye. (I'm not a great believer in coincidences, as it happens.)

"party hearty"

Wow, I feel so enlightened, for years I've been hearing Americans pronounce this as "party hardy" and never had any idea WTF they were on about.

EDIT: Oh, so they actually do mean hardy and it just makes less sense, I thought it was a pronunciation difficulty after reading Gregori's post. Nm then!

They're both about the same, but well, such is the English language between certain parts of North America and the UK.

This is a little slow, but I’ve been reading page 3 believing it to be the last page of this discussion. You can put this to my “noobieness”

And lets not forget when favors in the past were being given out to certain people for odd reasons such as "able to stand in one spot for a relatively long time"

Arcanis, you need to loosen up. The character Kalin would probably had a good reason for favouring the mentioned citizens, but decided to change its description to something amusing to lighten up the city – I may be wrong as I too am quite new, but that’s my interpretation of that. If my interpretation is true, then it completely contradicts your claim that Kalin could not see that

Gaudiguch is about freedom and the pursuit of it, and of, well, doing crazy stuff.
Because I believe that favouring someone for comical reasons is an example

of fun and free will

To tell the truth disagree with the city favour scroll coming out, people should be willing to do things to benefit their city at their own initiative. I personally see the scroll, and especially the donation one, as a blatant example bribery. But to be frank, CR advancement without it would be agonizingly slow, so hey, everything has a good and bad side to it.

Eh. You try it one way (nominations) and people complain that no one's being nominated. Lysandus came up with a system for all city ranks and everyone logged on at the time had a fit. Then it was back to nominations again, and really people WEREN'T being nominated with any frequency. So now there's a system to gain CR3 pretty easily.

To me, favours should be a bit like candy to get to city ranks two and three; ranks four through six should require significantly more effort. Why? Well, you gain a certain amount of protection against being removed and extra privileges (titles, ability to induct, ability to CF/DF at CR6).

The protection is extremely minor in anywhere but Halli and Gaudi. Any shmuck can get someone else to sign on about kicking you out, it's why Celest was able to massacre its self earlier. Just booted people straight off GM.

(Not really, I like just staying in ninja.gif )

I remember when Kalodan made a policy that anyone who sacrificed themself for that one res skill got communefavoured. I was CR6 within a very short time period. Also should point out that one of the main reasons I kept getting favours was that I participated in revolts. We don't really have that in Gaudi, but we have our reasons for it
Diamondais2010-06-02 20:22:37
We just found that it's easier to get people to help out with projects such as our stage, arena, and power gain if we offer incentives. Sure, it's a form of bribe but it's also no different than rewarding people for defence.
Noola2010-06-02 20:22:38
My Gaudi alt qualifies for a couple of those favors, one for sure, but looking at the waiting list, I hardly see the point. It'll be like a month before I get one anyway. laugh.gif

eta: I mean, I hardly see the point in adding my name to the list. I don't mean I'm gonna stop doing things. laugh.gif

Message the right people anyways, we'll hopefully get more people up to CR6 soon who can help move the list along faster.
