EDIT: And I just saw Sahmiam's first post in this thread. For shame, nephew, for shame! Ongaku would be very disappointed (at the very least) if he heard Sahm had been drunk in public, and despite not having a very close uncle-nephew relationship, Gaku would probably have smacked him a few times with his staff. Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame!
^ Intended effect of the "Holding the floor down" episode. Although it would be quite humorous to see "wee-litt'el" Ongaku against Sahm.

Hey, Gaku can be intimidating! ... when he wants to be... maybe... okay, probably not. Though yes! I kind of want that to come up sometime.

All you have to do is delve deeply into your hatred, and anger, and spitefulness. Learn to vocalize it and use it to your own ends. Crush those who oppose your methods, and fashion a throne for those who approve of you from the corpses of your enemies. Be confident, be sadistic, and forget that people count as people. Murder, blackmail, bribe, cheat, lie, steal, to get what you want. And in this fashion, get your guild mates to bow to your will. When you have learned the proper uses of such techniques, you will fashion a guild worthy of your ego. Reshape the guild to your image, Ongaku...and then the Geomancers will show the Basin of Life why it's time to rock and roll.

Wow, how did I miss this thread? I haven't read the whole thing (obviously, it's so huge) but I 100% agree with the OP that Magnagora suffers from a number of social problems.
For example, most of the city doesn't know that the clan Jhagar exists. Jhagar and occassionally Peashooter (which, again, not everyone knows about, though more probably know about the existence of Peashooter than Jhagar) is where all the PvP stuff is coordinated, the Midnight Legion is never even used anymore. What does this say about Magnagora, that a private, secretive clan coordinates the PvP instead of the original PvP clan that Daevos created, the clan that controls access to city credits and power rations?
There is a small clique of Magnagoran players who basically wish that the rest of the city didn't exist. They refuse to help other players and if they do pay any attention to them, they treat them badly for some cheap laughs.
They say that this is Magnagora's RP, but there is more than one way to roleplay a Magnagoran. Successful evil orgs in the IRE games have always successfully reconciled their evil RP with an approach that makes people want to play with them. In Lusternia, Daevos did this in early Magnagora. Glomdoring does it now. The current ruling clique pretends that Magnagora's RP is irreconcilable with common curtesy, maybe their RP is, but Magnagora's is not.
So, this clique of players spends half their time complaining about being outnumbered, the other half of the time spitting in the faces of everyone in the city who they don't consider to be one of them, and it drives people away into the many other orgs, and then they complain about being outnumbered some more, and take it out on more serfs who still don't have all their vials and enchants together. They either don't understand or don't care that there are other places people can go to, to roleplay an "evil" character without being griefed by their allies. Having an evil RP doesn't justify being a jerk to your team mates, unless you want to lose the game, is the simple truth

There are PLENTY of people within Jhagar who are willing (and who do) help people outside of it and no, no one wishes the rest of the city didn't exist. Don't be ridiculous.
Shaddus2010-07-11 16:49:06
Uhm Jhagar isn't for PVP. Jhagar is Aiakon's old artisan cartel, that he gave to Thoros to manage while he's away. It's for griefing, and 75% of the people that are in it now shouldn't even be in it, like (name redacted, person from Serenwilde with a high rank) because I'm pretty sure he's an elfen. That's right, it's a Fainite clan, or it used to be. It's really went downhill
So no, Jhagar doesn't "coordinate Magnagora's combat", it's just a clan where like minded people who happen to enjoy causing grief coordinate.
It also has a lot of private artisan items in it, so all you people don't need to be trying to get in.

Oh this thread got tasty again, like that gum which changes flavor halfway through.
I actually took Jello's comment as 'all pvp is started/coordinated/made through Jhagar, a private clan, instead of ML, the official IC defense/combat clan'. If that's true, it's a fair complaint.

But it's not limited solely to Magnagora, really.
We work hard to try to keep things to the Swarm really. It's too easy to talk about it elsewhere.

Very hard, and quite well at that, specifically during revolts, nodes, and so on.

Yeah it's definitely true, and all orgs usually think about starting / talk about fighting in OOC clans before moving it over IC to 'formally' coordinate.
Personally, we try to gauge feelings first over the clan, then if it looks promising, we bring it over IC and then coordinate targets, what to do, etc. there. Then all the complaints of 'omg x tactic is so lame' happens over the OOC clan while the 'hey we did awesome, hell yes!' goes to the IC one, which is amusing.

It's about knowing who likes it and who doesn't, its fairly obvious who doesn't, cause they make it known.
I've had a friend give Magnagora a try, said people were jerks and QQ'd from Lusternia forever.
I agree, too much bullying of serfs, I think i'm going to start bullying some nobles.
EDIT: @ Jello, the clique isn't as cliquey as it seems as a fair bit of the Magnagoran playerbase have a lot of say in whats going on, don't make Jhagar to be out what its not(as you have been doing for god knows how long).

Maybe what would be a good idea, not just for magnagora but for all cities and communes it to create help files. For instance in Achaea when I played and a new member of a city or guild popped in one of the ranking members woulld send them a tell and explain to them how to even read such a help file. Example: chlep serfs or something. The file would then explain HOW to roleplay and you could add in there that when people are treating you like crap that's the roleplaying aspect and if they have questions or concerns explain to them how to send tells to people. Everyone goes through the "tutorial" when they make a character. But it may not fully sink in without a real person answering questions. Especially someone new to MUDS. I remember back in 2005 when I started Achaea I was so so confused and if I didn't have RL friends I would have given up in a heartbeat. Now Iron Realms games make me a very happy camper
