Why do forcefields break when you siphon from a vortex? How would you go about collecting vortex power without it being an aetherhunt under another name?

It would be pretty silly to allow you to keep up a forcefield against monster attacks while you spawn monsters by siphoning. You could siphon and run from a vortex to get power, but that'd waste a ton of time.

Well as it is, siphoning is only worthwhile for the act of summoning monsters. Gathering power is secondary. And I don't see why that would be so bad.

It is, and is intended to be, parallel to Astral. If you could siphon power without having to kill the creatures, why wouldn't you just summon a million power all day long?

Nooo... before beasts got ranged attacks you could easily fly your ship over the vortex, siphoning power all day long and summoning beasts you didn't have to kill. And it still wasn't done much because it required getting a large crew going (a pilot, an empath and at least one siphoner) and even then, unless you had a lot of siphoners, you'd produce more power per time unit clearing an elemental plane with that same crew. I remember back during a discussion before the aetherreview, where Estarra was surprised that more people weren't using vortexes for gathering power.

The only problem I could see would be siphoning up a ton of beasts to ruin for others but... you can already do that.

Yeah, but Estarra always thought Astral was going to be used for getting power, too, and I think is still surprised it's rarely treated that way. The histories reveal the same attitude -- ooh, we get power, but we're stuck with creatures. Yet 99% of the business in astral is the other way around -- look, we can get creatures! Oh, and there's power, too. (Sometimes people have to figure out how to waste power just so they can link more.)

But there still has to be some reason why you can't just siphon a million power. If it's not getting thrown to other planes, and it's not getting creatures, what would it be? It should be possible to get lots of power, but not trivial.

Before the introduction of ranged attacks, Magnagora siphoned several hundred or thousand power by flying over while spamming siphon. We had so many gargantuans summoned you could feel the game get laggy as they tracked. If siphon didn't break forcefield, you'd get the same thing again.

I know that I link power on astral all the time, it's two birds with one stone, I fill up and I get creatures/offerings etc. I know plenty of others that do the same.

If I ever want to fill a collector (And there's times when linking is waaay too slow and so need my trusty ship full of power) it's not that difficult.

You just need to Three people, a siphoner, an empath and a pilot, and you can set down a ton of ruptures (I make a nice 3x3 square) and lead them over it. Can get a nice bit of gold from that, too. No experience but power and gold, that's pretty nice.

And yes, it does still work even with ranged attacks, you just need to outpace them whilst you're siphoning and then throw up a shield whilst you lead them over the ruptures.

Collector power is also very nice for one other reason, as compared to nexus power. I can totally see people draining down vortices for certain situations.

I remember I was part of a flight that filled... I think it was three collectors worth of power? That was... tedious, but a bit fun at the same time.
