I was part of an argument similar to this, and the argument (at least the one I was involved in) was never combat >>> RP. Man, I'm pretty much the greatest roleplayer in the game. The argument was that you need to reward defenders (not even combatants - just people who always go up to defend) as well as rewarding roleplayers. If you don't, then people will eventually figure out that defending is only ever a loss of personal resources.
Also: all organizations favour for getting stuff published/prestige. None of them limit favours from such things up to a rank. To say that other organizations oppress combatants is on the basis of that argument is... weird.
Seriously though, I pretty much am the greatest roleplayer.

Ugh.
The fact that Hallifax maintains RP cohesion in regards to its caste system, despite not being the RP of "whatever is mechanically best for me is my RP", is something to be admired, period. The same way that, as much as it can be frustrating for gaudi to put up with some of the excesses of "freedom", if we didn't do that, we would be a failed shell of an org that's just a few variables different from some generic system of combat.
As it turns out, RP that isn't play to win driven sometimes carries a cost. You can work around the cost and maintain the integrity of the RP. Something a rather recent thread has gotten some of us in Gaudi to do.
So both new orgs have some RP hiccups. That's to be expected. Kudos to people in both cities working to maintain the spirit of the thing without devolving into "MY RP IS WHAT MAKES US WIN."

I couldn't agree more.

I agree with this.

Your forum avatar doppleganger was in the gaudi thread "jokingly" commenting on letting Gaudi being taken over by halli. Not quite as much fun when people take cheap shots at your org, when you're working to improve it, is it?
Please do not treat me as if words of others are words of mine. As far as I know I have never taken a cheap shot at Gaudiguch, I rather admire the city, actually, from an OOC point of view.

This, though I still feel it's wise to invest in combatants. For example, I've had suggestions that the Illuminati increase the amount of credits someone in the Transformation Path (combat, basically) can buy every sale period.
I mean, there's going to come a point where an organization is going to be opposed, violently, and it's a morale-booster to know that you're somewhat able to stand on your own two feet. Based on Aicuthi's previous comment (swearing, which seems to be really common in this region of the game) there's still some kinks to work out there. >_>

To be fair, that's the trill racial pic, so it's not like he has anything to do with it...

Caste articles are Hallifax's way to become an hero.

Hence, "forum avatar doppleganger". At first, I thought it was Falcon. Either way, it explains some of the crassness towards the situation when we just got done with the corresponding "lolgaudi" thread.

I don't think making combatants more important than others is the key, Combatants come and go, unless they move to Glom in which case that's where they go to choke, but I digress, combatants are a dime a dozen, good combatants are hard to find sure, but anyone can web whore and type decapitate kalin... I know.. it's happened lots... where was I going with this? oh right.. combatants should be favoured and cared for and cultivated, but so should your influencers and prestige winners cause you need the latter to get anywhere and the former to keep the latter getting anywhere.

There's no reason to be crass on the forums when we can buy Glomdoring and be crass while we party at the Matrix!

Yup, this! I believe it was the Force Commander at the time of the Taint Wars who was both a warrior and a member of the upper castes, because he wrote a dissertation on something that was at the same time combat-related and scientific. The effect of electrical flux on body tissue? Go for it! Feel like making a lecture on various combat techniques? Could easily fall under a scientific or artistic lecture, depending on how it is framed.

This, especially the bolded.
I can understand Hallifax's rp is different, and I respect that. What I don't respect is how they (until a few months ago ic, thank you Elostian) basically ignored defending, or linking power into the nexus for favouring.

Glomdoring gets more stuff! Gaudiguch gets to raid unopposed, maybe even with help! Hallifax re-examines its priorities! It's not just win-win. It's win-win-win!

Why do I suddenly feel so inspired?
Ileein2010-08-09 17:43:48
Because Science.
EDIT: Oh, right, I wanted to make this point earlier.
Someone complained that Hallifax seems too bright and cheerful for a slave-holding, frankly amoral society, using my favorite little line ("Make Tomorrow a Brighter Day for Science!") as an example. I'm going to make the analogy with Gaudiguch here, with the superficial layer of RP covering a much darker secret, except that it's subtly different. Hallifax is, undoubtedly, a Rather Nasty Place to Live, unless you're higher-ranking. Keep in mind that the person who keeps spouting the Brighter Day nonsense often, shortly after posting it, has a chat with an underling about how to properly mutilate slaves/indentured servants in the name of science. This is the pattern I've been following for Hallifax's roleplay, and just so the Institute's roleplay: it may look bright, shiny, and "good" on the outside, but it harbors some decidedly nasty stuff.

There have been favours for defense before this, without Elostian jumping in! It hadn't been happening lately, but I'd been trying to encourage people to make recommendations for favours to the Board instead of sitting around and complaining about no one favouring them...

To my knowledge in the month period of time I went on hiatus to play Mag, not a single person sent a letter. So I sent one.
Moral of the story? Rock the boat if you can swim.
