I started typing and then deleted about three different responses to this, realized it would be incredibly stupid to reply to sincerely because it would just start some sort of dumb argument, and am now amusing myself by thinking "trolling is an art."

It hadn't been happening lately, but I'd been trying to encourage people to make recommendations for favours to the Board instead of sitting around and complaining about no one favouring them...

You didn't care enough to do it yourself? unsure.gif

If I did it myself, what would that change? I already know it's an option. I already recommend stuff to Arte all the time. The point is that you guys need to know you can do it. And I have recommended people after telling them to make recommendations, because they asked me to do it instead. I don't not care; I care a lot! I want people to be happy, and get favours where they are deserved!

Yup, this! I believe it was the Force Commander at the time of the Taint Wars who was both a warrior and a member of the upper castes, because he wrote a dissertation on something that was at the same time combat-related and scientific. The effect of electrical flux on body tissue? Go for it! Feel like making a lecture on various combat techniques? Could easily fall under a scientific or artistic lecture, depending on how it is framed.

I think Gregori was more talking about favouring people for peforming a lethal dance with an enemy (eg fighting), rather then writing a book about 'tactics'

Especially since writing a book about tactics in lusternia is still a very fictional work (since you can't go to ooc levels)

Well, fighters don't make an organization go round, that is for sure. And it is good that those who don't do combat are getting some recognition but let it be known that if you don't throw some nod toward the people who -are- willing to protect Hallifax and its territories don't expect them to come running when the poop hits the osciliating blade that pushes air across the room in a buffered pattern <--- Science!

I really like that "Rock the boat, if you can swim." I might have to steal that and use it one day.

It would result in...favours? All this "delegate task to someone else" business smells like irresponsibility, if you ask me.

Give a man a fish, that man knows where to go for fish. Teach a man to fish, and you just lost part of your market.

Surely you jest. You mean passing the buck isn't responsible?

NO, no. it's

Build a man a fire, he's warm for the night. Set a man on fire, and he's warm for the rest of his life.

doh.gif I like the part where you completely skip over the fact that I do recommend people for favours and have gotten a lot of people favoured that probably wouldn't have been otherwise.

Aggh you people YOU PEOPLE! When will you all just accept the fact that I do do things? tongue.gif

No, no. In the immortal words of Belkar, it's "See what we learned today, Mr Scruffy? Solve a man's problems with violence, help him for a day. Teach a man to solve his problems with violence, help him for a lifetime!"

OoTS for the WIN. If every combatant were like Belkar, we wouldn't have these discussions.

Hallifax, you need more Belkars.

You know I love you, Phoebus. I just think that mindset is precisely why nobody bothers. They think their voice has 0 value. Of all orgs, the Collective no less.

Excuse me, this isn't Celest. We teach our citizens to do practical things like write poems.

Actually, from what I've read and seen, her mindset is "I'll do it, but this would be so much easier if everyone else would do it too."

Hence the long period of time when nobody got favoured.

Those with a greater understanding of the art and science of combat will just have to step up and work to make sure defenders are being adequately recognized. They will also have to start taking positions of power to insure that defense is properly focused on within the city. So the simple solution is to work until you have enough power to oust the present leaders and place in a group more amenable to the views of those with a more martial view.
