Forum forgetfulness

I'm having an issue where firefox flat-out forgets what posts I've read. But only on some threads. It doesn't happen right after I go back to a topic, and in fact I can have read several other posts which don't get 'forgotten' this way in between the times it happens. It happens on all of my computers so far.

Does anyone know how the 'read' and 'unread' posts are kept track of?

some system information:

All the computers involved are running ubuntu 10.04, firefox 3.6.8 (though the problem began before the most recent upgrade to firefox), and I am using firefox weave(synch? I forgot what they're calling it now) to keep them all in sync.

It's possible that the sync is the culprit, but it knows what things I've viewed or not when I open it in IE on a newly created windows VM with no changes or stale internet files whatsoever (it is, in fact, the first site I went to on this VM, just to be sure) so I believe it to be something on the server side.

This started happening to me about two or three days ago. No idea why, never heard of sync, running windows 7 (for now, need to figure out how to partition my computer >_<), firefox 3.6.8, if for some reason you wanted to compare.

Maybe something with cookies? I'm not very computer savvy >_>

I've been getting the same problem. Windows 7 with Firefox 3.6.8. Though I do use different computers and don't keep them in sync, even if I stay on one computer it doesn't remember and forgets where I left off on this computer.
Unknown2010-08-12 00:09:55
Ok, so we can rule out it being sync, and yeah, I've had it happen when I stay on one computer. In fact, I haven't noticed it when moving between computers, just that it happens on all of them.

So far the only thing in common is firefox 3.6.8 . I still kind of doubt that it's cookies, since it happens on unsynced computers and stores the information on the server end as well (must do, since a brand new computer with no knowledge of lusternia's forums still knows what topics I've read)

I've noticed it too. Firefox 3.6.8. That's what we all have in common.

Well, that could be because everyone here just tries to be up-to-date, and Firefox is a fairly common browser.

It happens to me occasionally. I use Firefox, but it doesn't seem to care what the version is; over the years Firefox has updated many times. tongue.gif

I'll start using chrome for the forums and see if it continues. A quick search on the ip.board support forum did not turn anything useful up.

This is happening to me multiple times in < 30 minutes sometimes, though. If it was just a every few days thing even I wouldn't be all that worried about it, but it's become quite a nuisance.

It also seems to be happening more often the past couple of days, and I'm wondering what may have changed.
Ytran2010-08-12 05:21:11
This has been happening to me since, well, since I started browsing the forums numerous months ago, on both WinXP and Ubuntu, across numerous versions of Firefox. The same thing has started happening, in a far smaller way, on other IRE forums within the past couple weeks, as well.
Unknown2010-08-12 06:40:10
ok, it just did it to me right this moment. Forgot some of the posts I'd read. Including the one I had -just- clicked off of.

And I'm in chrome this time. So it's not limited to just firefox.

ETA: This is in part for the forum admins, so they know where to look in the logs. Shouldn't be more than 5 minutes back from the time of this edit.

This has happened to me for a long, long time now. More like a year, rather than days or weeks. XP, various versions of Firefox. I'd always assumed it was simple cookie mishandling, and got cozy with the 'mark forum read' link.
Everiine2010-08-12 11:13:40
I just checked, and it also happens to me on another board powered by IP.Board, so maybe it's a board "feature" that no one knows about.

Chrome user here and everything works fine and dandy. I'm running updates from the developer channel of chrome though. But this seems to be a software issue, so that shouldn't have to matter.

Make sure you are connecting through http://forums.lusternia.com and not http://lusternia.ire-community.com, the latter will cause cookie problems.

It did it to me last night with Chrome, but it may have been an older version, since I don't actually -use- that browser much. I do connect from forums.lusternia.com ... and it sounds like it's an ip board issue. Perhaps it will be fixed with the upcoming upgrade Estarra mentioned in her last forum announcement.

Any chance something is marking the threads as unread when an edit is made?
Noola2010-08-12 15:21:52
The only time this happens for me is if Firefox crashes or locks up and I have to end the program via the Task Manager. Firefox forgets all my tabs (unlike when I close it normally and it saves them) and every thread on the forums is marked unread when I pull it up.

But, that's the only time it happens.

This almost sounds like a valid possibility, except (in my experience), it's several threads all getting re-lit simultaneously. However, I'm unable to view it happening in actual real-time, so I won't say that it's not this (since it certainly could be).
