It has always been the case that a person can switch sides and nearly everyone just shrugs and accepts it no matter what they did before. (The exceptions are striking, but they are still exceptions.) Nowadays, the same applies to alliances and whole organizations, though. Just think of it like when the Red Sox and Yankees trade players: it doesn't matter where you were born or what you've done, only what uniform you're wearing right now.

The sporting analogy is apt, because, paradoxically, the people that most vehemently opposed the organization they're attempting to join find it easier to switch, as they're viewed as a more valuable combative asset. They sometimes have to face a little hoop-jumping to get there - but they tend to be the kind of people for whom hoop-jumping (in the form of "big" offerings of essence and gold) is easy as pie.
