-Something winners can do to help the morale of the game as a whole- don't be snotty and pretentious about winning. Even if it is in character. It very quickly becomes obnoxious to the point that the game isn't fun. Think about it, why log in if some part of your play time will be taken up by someone telling you that the org you joined is getting its butt kicked, in some arrogant way or another? Even worse if the person in question is entirely tertiary to the process? Its one thing to be excessively bitter, I'm guilty of that, and its not a particularly endearing quality. But its just as bad to be a pompous turd about winning, if not worse.
Actually, I would prefer it if the winners were a bit more snotty and pretentious in game, as opposed to the forums. What ever happen to shouts of "Hahaha Serengorafax, you have got your just come-uppance for defying the Wyrd/Light! Now reap the wild oats you have sown and despair at our might!"? Now pretty much all I see is an org/alliance accomplishing something in game and then being immediately smug about it to the point where I feel like some people actually hate other players in opposing orgs. That is the most demoralizing thing to me and makes me incredibly bitter about the game: that other players in the game bring that in-game rivalry out to an OOC forum.

Did Glom actually make it a law not to shout now?

Meh, to me, it was just as bad IC as it was on the forums. A lot of it depends on the delivery and context of course. Shouting wars are also usually a lesser offender.

3.4 THE SHOUT COMMAND
Generally speaking, if you want to speak to an individual player, it's best to
use tells rather than shouts. Further, to reduce unwanted spam from a
potentially valuable channel, insulting other players, or gloating over them,
is prohibited on shouts.

While it's rarely actually enforced, if it became more and more common I could see that changing.

I think that smugness only comes out when debating against players that immediately cast their negative views about the opposite side on forums instead of dealing with things in game.
And glomdoring is always shouting their 'Glory be' ditty. How can you miss that?

No, it comes out other times, too, as does the other side of the coin (forum bitterness). Each is as bad as the other, and each feeds on and contributes to the other, too. Fun!
Inre: shouts, I suspect that shouts that might be termed "gloating" but which are genuinely RP-fueled and aimed at a 'side,' rather than a particular player or small group of players, would probably be okay. That's how I'd rule if I was an administrator, anyway, which means nothing but whatever.

That's not smug though... we tend to do it only when we're happy and proud of each other. It's not for the general 'you', it's for us.
Malicia2011-03-05 04:23:58
I think you misunderstood me. He asked:
I think people do shout to display their feelings/pride etc. Not smugness.

The Glom shouting thing isn't so much a law as it's just an unspoken rule
The idea is we don't want people shouting dumb inane stuff that is typical of most shouting, though Celina seems to be exempt from this
We just shout to celebrate a victory (in today's case, we took out Magnawildifax at extreme odds, (psst iasmos, they put up a shrine, and we still won despite being outnumbered and yeah we had a shrine too)).
Part of it in truth is gloating by shouting oh hey we rock, but it's typically just a simple GBTG call as to not be overly snotty.

I actually chuckled when you did it. At least for me, it wasn't the 'HI let me rub my smug in your face' that people seem to interpret it as.
It was definitely a fun experience. (the domoth)

Daereth2011-03-05 08:36:09
Nobody uses shouts for anything but gloating and insults. There is no other reason for it. You want to bad mouth someone or alot of people/and or shouting your happiness over screwing over someone else? What's that? You want everyone else to be forced to hear it too? Well, shouting is just the thing for you.
Aicuthi2011-03-05 09:07:27
In all honesty, the my-org-is-better-than-yours thing doesn't bother me. If they want to gloat and be full of themselves, who cares? I think more than half the time, its not about being victorious, but pulling a reaction out of people.

Xiel2011-03-05 12:16:49
Sounds like a personal problem if they didn't choose to capitalize on their tactical advantage then. Nothing stopped them from expanding besides their choice to just sit there, I'd think. -ponder-

Unknown2011-03-05 12:25:13
Nah, we actually do have invasion mobs, and it's been used in the past. They're willowisps.
We didn't really have any tactical advantage - we both had wrath and gravity up. And we didn't really have enough people to spread out, that's why we didn't leave the domoth room.

Last I checked it was 21 (you) vs 8 (us). This is the Harmony domoth, right? Viynain has the complete list of people who participated. 21 vs 8 ... seems like enough numbers to spread.
